The Palgrave Handbook of Artistic and Cultural Responses to War since 1914 - The British Isles, the United States and... The Palgrave Handbook of Artistic and Cultural Responses to War since 1914 - The British Isles, the United States and Australasia (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Martin Kerby, Margaret Baguley, Janet McDonald
R4,930 Discovery Miles 49 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This handbook explores a diverse range of artistic and cultural responses to modern conflict, from Mons in the First World War to Kabul in the twenty-first century. With over thirty chapters from an international range of contributors, ranging from the UK to the US and Australia, and working across history, art, literature, and media, it offers a significant interdisciplinary contribution to the study of modern war, and our artistic and cultural responses to it. The handbook is divided into three parts. The first part explores how communities and individuals responded to loss and grief by using art and culture to assimilate the experience as an act of survival and resilience. The second part explores how conflict exerts a powerful influence on the expression and formation of both individual, group, racial, cultural and national identities and the role played by art, literature, and education in this process. The third part moves beyond the actual experience of conflict and its connection with issues of identity to explore how individuals and society have made use of art and culture to commemorate the war. In this way, it offers a unique breadth of vision and perspective, to explore how conflicts have been both represented and remembered since the early twentieth century.

Blended Learning and Online Tutoring - Planning Learner Support and Activity Design (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Janet Macdonald Blended Learning and Online Tutoring - Planning Learner Support and Activity Design (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Janet Macdonald
R5,480 Discovery Miles 54 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Blended learning provides the flexibility to accommodate the varied requirements of pedagogies, disciplines and levels of course, together with the needs of a wide variety of learners. However, anyone concerned with the integration of online tutoring to support students appropriately may need to reassess current practice. This book adopts a pragmatic and common-sense approach to blended learning by situating the use of online media within a well-grounded teaching and learning strategy. It provides practical ideas for the successful implementation of blended strategies, including good practice in both asynchronous and synchronous tutoring, appropriate assessment design for developing successful blended learners, and innovative approaches to professional development for distance tutors. It is illustrated with a wide variety of examples and comments from students and practitioners in both distance and campus-based environments in 13 different countries. Since the first edition was published in 2006, there has been great interest in Web 2.0 technologies and their potential for use in an educational environment. This second edition has therefore incorporated many new examples of good practice, making use of a combination of tried and tested tools as well as blogs and wikis for supporting students. There has also been a recent rise in the use of activity-based learning and interest in its potential for supporting students in distance and online environments. The new edition incorporates many new exemplars of learning activity design in Part Three, to illustrate approaches to the development of critical, independent learners.

The British Navy's Victualling Board, 1793-1815 - Management Competence and Incompetence (Hardcover, New): Janet Macdonald The British Navy's Victualling Board, 1793-1815 - Management Competence and Incompetence (Hardcover, New)
Janet Macdonald
R2,332 Discovery Miles 23 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An examination of the Royal Navy's Victualling Board, the body responsible for supplying the fleet. During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, the Royal Navy increased its manpower from fewer than 20,000 to more than 147,000 men, with a concomitant increase in the quantities of food and drink required to sustain them. The organisation responsible for this, the Victualling Board, performed its tasks using techniques and systems which it had developed over the previous 110 years. In terms of actually delivering supplies to warships, troopships and army garrisons abroad, the Victualling Board performed well given the constraints of long-distance communications and intermittent difficulties in obtaining supplies. However, its other areas of responsibility showed poor performance, as evidenced by the reports of several Parliamentary enquiries. This book examines in detail the processes by which the Victualling Board performed its core and non-core tasks, identifying the areas of competence and incompetence, and establishing the underlying causes of the incompetencies. JANET MACDONALD, author of the highly acclaimed Feeding Nelson's Navy (Chatham, 2004), has recently completed a thesis at King's College London. After a business career, and running an equestrian organisation, she spent ten years as a freelance writer, publishing more than thirty books.

"Hustle's personal ""Harlem"" was sorely in need of a renaissance. For him, it was the place where a scared kid named Eric Samson had been ditched by druggy parents and dismissed by frustrated teachers. "
Abandoned to the streets to raise himself, Eric Samson knows life won't be easy, beginning with the choices he must make. The fast cash of the streets still tempts him, but the threat of getting locked up - again - is daunting. Maybe Eric's way out is as Harlem Hustle, the rapper he dreams of being. At his side is Manley "Ride" Freeman, surrogate brother and best friend. And Jeannette Simpson, the college-bound "round-the-way" girl he hopes will be more than a friend. But does Eric have the strength to leave the familiar street life behind and the courage to reach for his dream?
In her companion to "Brother Hood," Janet McDonald once again captures the rhythms of Harlem in this fast, funny story of a restless teenager who uses the power of words to rise above it all.

"An eloquent account of a remarkable life, "Project Girl" should be placed on all high school and college reading lists and offered to anyone looking for a book beautifully written."--Frank McCourt, author of "Angela's Ashes"

"In her engrossing memoir, McDonald, a Brooklyn-born lawyer now living in Paris, compares herself to Icarus because she, too, soared and fell mightily. The difference is that after her falls, McDonald picked herself up and charged onward."--Sara Ivry, "New York Times Book Review"

"Devastating. . . . McDonald argues her case with lawyerly concision, drop-dead ghetto humor, and just a touch of schoolgirl psychobabble. . . . No wonder McDonald fled to Paris, where, freed from the American obsession with race, she wrote this stinging epitaph for the decade that gave us the word "yuppie.""--Susanne Ruta, "Entertainment Weekly"

"Going to the bookstore is becoming more and more like riding in a subway--there are a whole bunch of people with stories to tell but very few who know how to tell a good story. Every once in a while though, we might find ourselves sitting next to someone whose story is so intriguing that we actually miss our stop because we are so engrossed in their tale. Such is the effect of Janet McDonald's "Project Girl."--Deborah Cowell, "Black Issues Book Review

A tough and funny project girl manages to make that chill wind blow away
The good life, according to Aisha Ingram, is easy. It's hanging with friends, dancing, listening to music, whatever . . . but it doesn't include worrying about the future. Chilling out is her mantra until she receives a sixty-day termination-of-welfare-benefits notice. Without her monthly food stamps and assistance checks and with no help from the father of her two children, Aisha's life threatens to become a little too "chilly." The clock is ticking and she doesn't have many options, but one thing she knows for sure: workfare is not for her. There's no way she's going to scrub subway cars or sweep city sidewalks. Aisha tries to come up with other ways to get money, but things don't look good. Soon another notice comes: only thirty days left. Then she sees an ad on TV for BIGMODELS, and she figures she might as well check out the agency. After all, she is pretty enough. But just when it looks like Aisha's problems might be solved, things grow crazy again.
In Aisha, Janet McDonald has created a larger-than-life heroine who finds and succeeds at what is right for her.
