Collection of four action adventures featuring the DC Comics superhero. In 'Batman' (1989) the streets of Gotham City are no longer safe for criminals, who are being picked off by a masked vigilante in a rubber suit - dubbed 'Batman' by the press. Reporter Alexander Knox (Robert Wuhl) teams with photographer Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger) in an attempt to discover Batman's true identity - an investigation which leads them to the door of mysterious millionaire Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton).

Meanwhile, crime boss Carl Grissom (Jack Palance)'s attempt to rid himself of untrustworthy henchman Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson) does not go according to plan, and after emerging physically and mentally disfigured from a vat of chemicals, Napier reinvents himself as the psychotic Joker. In 'Batman Returns' (1992), 33 years after being abandoned as a baby, Oswald Cobblepot (Danny DeVito) returns to Gotham City, bent on revenge, as the Penguin. He begins a warped campaign to become mayor of Gotham, helped by millionaire businessman Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) and undertakes a mission to murder every firstborn son in the city - a plan which will avenge his own beginnings.

Meanwhile, Batman (Keaton) emerges to stop him, but struggles with his dual identity after becoming romantically involved with Shreck's former secretary Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer), who takes up her own secret identity as Catwoman to get revenge on Shreck. In 'Batman Forever' (1995) former District Attorney Harvey 'Two-Face' Dent (Tommy Lee Jones) is terrorising Gotham City when a new villain appears on the scene - The Riddler (Jim Carrey). Together they plot to take over Gotham and discover Batman (Val Kilmer)'s identity, using a device which can probe the human mind.

Meanwhile, the caped crusader is joined in his fight by new sidekick Robin (Chris O'Donnell), whose trapeze-artist family have recently been slain by Two-Face. Finally, in 'Batman and Robin' (1997) Batman (George Clooney) and Robin (O'Donnell) have to stop the vengeful Mr Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) from taking over Gotham City. To make matters worse, the venomous Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman) decides to join forces with Freeze.

Luckily for the caped crusader and his rebellious ward, they team up with new partner Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone).

Chemical Processes for a Sustainable Future (Hardcover): Trevor Letcher, Janet Scott, Darrell Patterson Chemical Processes for a Sustainable Future (Hardcover)
Trevor Letcher, Janet Scott, Darrell Patterson
R2,923 Discovery Miles 29 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This comprehensive book approaches sustainability from two directions, the reduction of pollution and the maintaining of existing resources, both of which are addressed in a thorough examination of the main chemical processes and their impact. Divided into five sections, each introduced by a leading expert in the field, the book takes the reader through the various types of chemical processes, demonstrating how we must find ways to lower the environmental cost (of both pollution and contributions to climate change) of producing chemicals. Each section consists of several chapters, presenting the latest facts and opinion on the methodologies being adopted by the chemical industry to provide a more sustainable future. A follow-up to Materials for a Sustainable Future (Royal Society of Chemistry 2012), this book will appeal to the same broad readership - industrialists and investors; policy makers in local and central governments; students, teachers, scientists and engineers working in the field; and finally editors, journalists and the general public who need information on the increasingly popular concepts of sustainable living.

Cellulose Nanoparticles - Chemistry and Fundamentals (Hardcover): Vijay Kumar Thakur, Elisabete Frollini, Janet Scott Cellulose Nanoparticles - Chemistry and Fundamentals (Hardcover)
Vijay Kumar Thakur, Elisabete Frollini, Janet Scott
R6,583 Discovery Miles 65 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cellulose nanoparticles (CNP) are a class of bio-based nanoscale materials, which are of interest due to their unique structural features and properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and renewability. They are promising candidates for applications including in biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, electronics, barrier films, nanocomposites, membranes, and supercapacitors. New resources, extraction procedures and treatments are currently under development to satisfy increasing demands for cost-effective and sustainable methods of manufacturing new types of cellulose nanoparticle-based materials on an industrial scale. Cellulose Nanoparticles: Chemistry and Fundamentals covers the synthesis, characterization and processing of cellulose nanomaterials. It aims to address the recent progress in the production methodologies for cellulose nanoparticles, covering principal cellulose resources and the main processes used for isolation. Chapters cover the preparation and characterisation of cellulose nanocrystals and nanofibrils. Together with Volume 2, these books form a useful reference work for graduate students and researchers in chemistry, materials science, nanoscience and green nanotechnology.

The Light and other Collected Poems (Paperback): Janet Scott McDaniel The Light and other Collected Poems (Paperback)
Janet Scott McDaniel
R203 Discovery Miles 2 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Ms. McDaniel's first book of poetry- reflects the wide range of human emotions: love and loss in all its manifestations, redemption and discovery, ultimate joy and the depths of introspection. The reader is invited behind closed doors to witness the passions and the gut-wrenching spirit of that which is a personal and protected space. Ms. McDaniel's poems weave a rich tapestry, clear and eloquent, of life in all its wonder and challenge. Photographs and background stories make this an even more intimate journey as the voice of the poet emerges from conflict and struggle stronger than ever. Many of the pieces, while profoundly moving to any reader, are particularly empowering to women. Her poems strike the heart and reach into the soul, charting a unique new path into contemporary poetry. THE LIGHT leaves us touched by the mastery of the words and the emotions they invoke.

R202 Discovery Miles 2 020 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Parallel Dreams, Janet Scott McDaniel's second book of poetry, demonstrates her rare gift for weaving rich imagery around the palpable emotions of human experience in a way that is both inescapably beautiful and in a writing style that captivates the reader. Parallel Dreams delves into the human experience giving a fresh perspective to all aspects of life: love, loss, memory, and dimensions seen and unseen, mystically offering readers joy, tears, and inspiration on every page. "Parallel Dreams gives the reader poems with tight weaves, rich colors, long echoes. Janet's work resonates on many levels, as she is one of the rare poets who is expressive and soul-searching, lyrical and eloquent, writing in the tradition of the Celtic bards. Her work is rich and inspiring, unique and amazing, and most assuredly...unforgettable." - Chris Dickerson, novelist, playwright and poet.

What Canst Thou Say? Towards a Quaker Theology (Paperback): Janet Scott What Canst Thou Say? Towards a Quaker Theology (Paperback)
Janet Scott
R389 Discovery Miles 3 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Are Quakers Christian? Is it possible for Quakerism to be both Christian and Universalist? These are just two of the questions which form the starting point for this book. In exploring them, it becomes clear that they cannot be answered in isolation for they are linked to a whole complex of questions about Jesus, God and the nature of human living. So it becomes necessary to engage in theology. But for Quakers this must be from a distinctively Quaker standpoint which seeks to be both undogmatic and concerned with practical issues. Most of all it must be grounded in our corporate experience of God. Janet Scott attempts to begin this process. She explores what we may say about Jesus and about God, sets out one way in which Quakerism may be both Christian and Universalist, and points out areas needing further discussion.
