Children at Risk - The Precarious State of Children's Well-being in America (Paperback): Janice Crouse Children at Risk - The Precarious State of Children's Well-being in America (Paperback)
Janice Crouse
R1,412 Discovery Miles 14 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The desire for our children to be free from want and danger and to be able to enjoy their youth in innocence would seem to be universal. Conventional wisdom says that parents in every socio-economic level of society share the dream of preserving their children's innocence. All want to provide a childhood and adolescence that shelters and protects children from the harshness of life and nurtures them until they are able to withstand the onslaught of reality. One need only look at troubled areas of the world, such as Northern Ireland, parts of the Middle East, or any number of other points on the globe, to see how weak is any communion forged out of these universal desires for the welfare of children. Even in the United States, the competition of ideas and values about what represents the "good" society in which to raise our children is fierce-as are differing views about the value of innocence and even life itself. These differing ideas and values affect people's actions even when they have never reflected on them, or have never cared enough to formulate those values into a coherent worldview. Crouse contends that without morals, children are at risk. Moral boundaries, not moral relativism, provide a safe haven for children by preserving their innocence and protecting them from predators and pedophiles. When authentic religious faith has been quashed, children are no longer safe. When the underlying values are wrong, when there are no common values unifying a people, even the best programs and most honorable of intentions are doomed to failure. Well-intentioned programs and policies inevitably fail miserably without an undergirding moral foundation, as is documented by an abundance of data and the social trends in America today.

Marriage Matters - Perspectives on the Private and Public Importance of Marriage (Paperback): Janice Crouse Marriage Matters - Perspectives on the Private and Public Importance of Marriage (Paperback)
Janice Crouse
R1,432 Discovery Miles 14 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Marriage Matters, Janice Shaw Crouse argues that marriage is a critical element in a free society and that society's most vulnerable communities, especially minorities and the poor, suffer the most from the retreat from marriage. Because marriage advances the public interest, we should create laws and policies that support rather than undermine it. Crouse demonstrates both the public and private importance of marriage, and organizes her argument in a thoughtful and logical manner. Crouse argues that marriage is by far the best family unit for raising children, and shows how the trend away from marriage has fuelled some of the nation's worst social problems. Households lacking traditional fathers are disproportionately poor. Crouse notes the government has taken on a breadwinner role by creating welfare programs such as food stamps and Medicaid, but observes that social programs cannot provide the moral guidance of a father. The groundwork for strong marriages and lasting relationships is examined in detail. Crouse also discusses the role of sex in marriages and the harmful influence of casual sex. She shows how marriage matters to individuals (specifically to women and children) and depicts same-sex marriage as a potential threat to the institution. Other public policy issues affecting marriage are also explored.

In Marriage Matters, Janice Shaw Crouse argues that marriage is a critical element in a free society and that society's most vulnerable communities, especially minorities and the poor, suffer the most from the nation's retreat from marriage. Crouse writes that marriage advances the public interest and we should create laws and policies that support rather than undermine it. She demonstrates both the public and private importance of marriage, and organizes her argument in a thoughtful and logical manner.

Compared to other household arrangements, Crouse observes, marriage is by far the best for raising children and offers financial advantages as well. Writing about bullying, Crouse shows how the trend away from marriage has lead to poor child-rearing and to some of the nation's worst contemporary problems. In household arrangements with an absence of traditional fathers, the government has in some ways overtaken this role by creating social programs such as food stamps, Social Security, and Medicare. Social programs are but a small part of an effective solution.

The groundwork for strong marriages and lasting relationships is examined in detail. Crouse then discusses the role of sex in marriages and the harmful influence of casual sex. The second half of the work shows how marriage matters to individuals (specifically to women and children) and depicts same-sex marriage as a threat to the institution. Other public policy issues affecting marriage are also explored.
