On the one hand the development of Internet, mobile communications, distributed computing, computer software and databases storing essential enterprise information has helped to conduct business and personal communication between individual people. On the other hand it has created many opportunities for abuse, fraud and expensive damage. This book is a selection of the best papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop dealing with the Subject of Cyberspace Security and Defense. This volume contains papers presented at the NATO sponsored Advanced Research Workshop on "Software for Parallel Computation" held at the University of Calabria, Cosenza, Italy, from June 22 to June 26, 1992. The purpose of the workshop was to evaluate the current state-of-the-art of the software for parallel computation, identify the main factors inhibiting practical applications of parallel computers and suggest possible remedies. In particular it focused on parallel software, programming tools, and practical experience of using parallel computers for solving demanding problems. Supercomputing is an important science and technology that enables the scientist or the engineer to simulate numerically very complex physical phenomena related to large-scale scientific, industrial and military applications. It has made considerable progress since the first NATO Workshop on High-Speed Computation in 1983 (Vol. 7 of the same series). Fifteen original contributions from experts in high-speed computation on multi-processor architectures, concurrent programming and parallel algorithms. Experts in high-speed computation agree that the rapidly growing demand for more powerful computers can only be met by a radical change in computer architecture, a change from a single serial processor to an aggregation of many processors working in parallel. At present, our knowledge about multi-processor architectures, concurrent programming or parallel algorithms is very limited. This book discusses all three subjects in relation to the HEP supercomputer that can handle multiple instruction streams and multiple data streams (MIMD). The HEP multiprocessor is an innovative general purpose computer, easy to use by anybody familiar with FORTRAN.
