This edition gives a side-by-side parallel translation of Moliere 's Tartuffe using Curtis Hidden Page 's translation. Tartuffe was first performed in 1664 and is one of the most famous theatrical comedies, the characters of Tartuffe, Elmire, and Valere are among the greatest classical theatre roles. Following the first performance, it was censored by King Louis XIV, probably due to the influence of the archbishop of Paris, who was the King's confessor. Due to Moliere's play, contemporary French and English both use the word "tartuffe" to describe a hypocrite who superficially feigns virtue. The play is written entirely in 1,962 twelve-syllable lines (alexandrines) of rhyming couplets.

Tartuffe (full title: Tartuffe, or The Hypocrite) is one of the most famous theatrical comedies by Moliere. Moliere wrote Tartuffe in 1664. Plot: Orgon's family is up in arms because Orgon and his mother have fallen under the influence of Tartuffe, a pious fraud (and a vagrant prior to Orgon's help). Tartuffe pretends to be pious and to speak with divine authority, and Orgon and his mother no longer take any action without first consulting him. Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known by his stage name Moliere, (January 15, 1622 - February 17, 1673) was a French playwright and actor who is considered to be one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature. Among Moliere's best-known works are Le Misanthrope (The Misanthrope), L'Ecole des femmes (The School for Wives), Tartuffe ou L'Imposteur, (Tartuffe or the Imposter), L'Avare (The Miser), Le Malade imaginaire (The Imaginary Invalid), and Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (The Bourgeois Gentleman).

This cannot offend you; there is not a suspicion of a resemblance between him and you; and you know what the world thinks, that he is your father only in name.
HEN. The safest thing to do would be to gain my mother over. My father easily consents to everything, but he places little weight on what he himself resolves. Are you not ashamed, considering who you are, to form, such designs as you do? to intend to carry off a respectable girl, and interrupt a marriage on which her whole happiness depends?

Say rather, unhappy mortal in having such a disgraceful spouse through whose guilty passion, it is now but too clear, I have been cuckolded without any feeling of compassion. Yet I allow him to go away after such a discovery, and stand with my arms folded like a regular silly-billy! I ought at least to have knocked his hat off, thrown stones at him, or mud on his cloak; to satisfy my wrath I should rouse the whole neighbourhood, and cry, "Stop, thief of my honour!"
