A la suite d'une discussion a propos de l'ordre et du chaos avec Lucien Gregory, un poete anarchiste, Gabriel Syme, lui-meme poete et policier, infiltre une societe secrete anarchiste en y prenant, a la place de Gregory, la fonction designee sous le nom de Jeudi. Il rencontre ensuite les autres membres du conseil de cette societe, preside par Dimanche, individu massif et proteiforme a l'allure de surhomme: ce sont les nommes Lundi, Mardi, Mercredi, Vendredi et Samedi. Entraine dans diverses peripeties, Syme decouvre, a travers differents jeux de masques ou l'identite precise de chacun des membres semble s'evanouir (hormis dans le cas de Dimanche qui demeure insaisissable), qu'ils sont eux-memes des infiltres qui ont tous ete recrutes par un individu mysterieux que personne n'a jamais vu. Il n'y a donc jamais eu de societe secrete anarchiste, et les six infiltres s'interrogent a present sur les veritables intentions de Dimanche. Ils se mettent a sa recherche pour decouvrir qui celui-ci est reellement et qui ils sont eux-memes sous leurs differents masques. Apres une course-poursuite a dos d'elephant a travers Londres et en ballon, Dimanche finit par reunir a une fete tous les protagonistes, et il leur devoile l'archetype biblique qu'ils incarnent, symbolise pour chacun d'entre eux par leur surnom, qui est un jour de la semaine. Survient enfin le Veritable Anarchiste, Lucien Gregory, le destructeur et contradicteur, qui defie l'assemble des sept anges du ciel et est finalement refute par Syme qui, se tournant vers Dimanche, lui demande: Avez-vous jamais souffert? Dimanche disparait alors et Syme se retrouve soudain dans la situation de depart du roman, discutant avec Gregory dans les rues de Londres, sans avoir eu conscience de s'etre eveille d'un cauchemar, mais transfigure par ses aventures.
