Brooklyn-born photographer Helen Levitt (1913-2009) was an assistant to Walker Evans and a friend of Henri Cartier-Bresson, but forged her own path with fierce independence and endless curiosity about the world around her. She is best known for her street photography, capturing children at play on the streets of Depression-era New York and chalk drawings on walls, but she also cast her eye upon the adult world, seeking out moments of movement, transience and theatricality. Following her first solo exhibition at MoMA in 1943, she devoted more than a decade to filmmaking, but returned to photography in the late 1950s and began to work in colour as well as black and white. French-Moroccan artist Yto Barrada (born 1971) explores postcolonial history and contemporary geopolitical shifts from a non-western perspective, with a particular focus on her hometown of Tangiers. In 2004 she won recognition for her photographic series "A Life Full of Hopes--The Strait Project." This volume provides a retrospective of her films, installations, sculptures and publications.

Social and ecological developments are closely intertwined in our present day. To what extent, however, is usually revealed too late and only at the moment of catastrophe. This is precisely what Julien Guinand's spectacular documentary photographs show. His camera focuses on two mountain ranges in Japan: the Kii Mountains, on the peninsula of the same name, and the Ashio in northern Tokyo. Both are places that have suffered greatly from man-made climate change, whether through the destructive power of a gigantic typhoon season or the immense stress of industrial copper mining. Guinand has tracked the massive environmental destruction that continues to leave its traces.
