Helen Levitt (Paperback): Jean-Francois Chevrier Helen Levitt (Paperback)
Jean-Francois Chevrier
R300 Discovery Miles 3 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Brooklyn-born photographer Helen Levitt (1913-2009) was an assistant to Walker Evans and a friend of Henri Cartier-Bresson, but forged her own path with fierce independence and endless curiosity about the world around her. She is best known for her street photography, capturing children at play on the streets of Depression-era New York and chalk drawings on walls, but she also cast her eye upon the adult world, seeking out moments of movement, transience and theatricality. Following her first solo exhibition at MoMA in 1943, she devoted more than a decade to filmmaking, but returned to photography in the late 1950s and began to work in colour as well as black and white. Lyrical and witty, her images reveal the streets of New York as flowing with life and unexpected poetry. With 68 illustrations

The global success story of the Basel architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron has local roots. This book traces these origins while identifying the essential ideas, professional ethics, and development of their architectural practice, established in 1978. The biographies of both architects and the activities of their practice are intimately bound up with the town of Basel. With this embeddedness in Basel as a point of departure, the authors elucidate central themes of their architectural oeuvre: from habitat to monument. With reference to exemplary buildings, they analyze the motifs, constructive principles, and spatial design of the architectonic works of Herzog & de Meuron. In addition, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron lead us on tours through Basel and its surroundings: statements by the architects, along with photographs taken especially for this volume by George Dupin, present the locales and buildings that have played key roles for the work of these architects. The book is rounded out by an intensive exchange of ideas between the architects and Jean-Francois Chevrier.

Jeff Wall - Catalogue Raisonne 2005-2021 (Hardcover): Gary Dufour Jeff Wall - Catalogue Raisonne 2005-2021 (Hardcover)
Gary Dufour; Contributions by Jean-Francois Chevrier, Thierry De Duve, David Campany
R3,570 Discovery Miles 35 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A handsome volume of the renowned photographer's work from 2005 to 2021 Best known for his large-scale photographs, carefully constructed "near documentaries" created in collaboration with the subjects, Jeff Wall (b. 1946) is one of the most influential photographers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Often displayed as backlit color transparencies, Wall's works have helped define the use of color and painterly sensibilities in contemporary art photography. This volume collects over fifteen years' worth of new work from Jeff Wall in a lavish presentation that includes multiple gatefolds to better convey the scale of Wall's work. As a collection of Wall's most recent work, this volume will include numerous pieces that are as-yet unfamiliar to many of his fans. Chevrier's essay deftly summarizes the varied directions of Wall's recent work and contextualizes them within the body of work that precedes this volume; de Duve's and Campany's wide-ranging conversations with the artist cover the role of performance and the effects of spontaneity and scale, respectively. Julien Guinand - Two Mountains (Paperback): Jean-Francois Chevrier, Hidetaka Ishida, Jean-Christophe Valmalette Julien Guinand - Two Mountains (Paperback)

Social and ecological developments are closely intertwined in our present day. To what extent, however, is usually revealed too late and only at the moment of catastrophe. This is precisely what Julien Guinand's spectacular documentary photographs show. His camera focuses on two mountain ranges in Japan: the Kii Mountains, on the peninsula of the same name, and the Ashio in northern Tokyo. Both are places that have suffered greatly from man-made climate change, whether through the destructive power of a gigantic typhoon season or the immense stress of industrial copper mining. Guinand has tracked the massive environmental destruction that continues to leave its traces. His pictures are impressive evidence of past disasters, which at the same time open up a warning view of the future.

What does it mean, not only to be an artist, but to become one? What does the quest for the personal artistic language consist of? The life and art of Japanese artist Teruko Yokoi provides some insight into this process. Teruko Yokoi: Tokyo-New York-Paris-Bern features the artist's work from the years 1954 to 1964 when stretched between Tokyo, San Francisco, New York, Paris, and Bern. She is experimenting, trying out the new and forging her own language of artistic expression. The various stages and her experiences in these different cities are colorful influences on her body of work. The illustrated catalogue traces the dynamic story of an extremely prolific and vibrant artist whose art has not only testified to her unrelenting creative energy, but - torn between East and West - it mirrored the debates on the modern post-war painting. The book is an important contribution to the literature on great female artists.
