The capability approach has developed significantly since Amartya Sen was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1998. It is now recognised as being highly beneficial in the analysis of poverty and inequality, but also in the redefinition of policies aimed at improving the well-being of individuals. The approach has been applied within numerous sectors, from health and education to sustainable development, but beyond the obvious interest that it represents for the classical economics tradition, it has also encountered certain limitations. While acknowledging the undeniable progress that the approach has made in renewing the thinking on the development and well-being of a population, this book takes a critical stance. It focuses particularly on the approach's inadequacy vis-a-vis the continental phenomenological tradition and draws conclusions about the economic analysis of development. In a more specific sense, it highlights the fact that the approach is too bound by standard economic logic, which has prevented it from taking account of a key 'person' dimension - namely, the ability of an individual to assume responsibility. As a result, this book advocates the notion that if the approach is used carelessly in relation to development policies, it can cause a number of pernicious effects, some of which may lead to disastrous consequences. Due to its multidisciplinary nature, this book will be of interest to those working in the fields of economics, philosophy, development studies and sociology.

The editors and authors, with backgrounds in academia and industry, tie together recent and established technologies for the upcoming change to sustainable industrial chemistry. The extensive worldwide activities towards that goal are exemplified with a series of green processes. Some of these processes are already commercially applied (squalene to squalane, hydraulic fluids from vegetable oils, biosourced polycarbonates), others are ready for a large scale implementation (glycerol to acrylic acid, biosourced acrylonitrile and levulinic acid, polyamides from fatty nitriles-esters hydrogenation, butadiene from bioethanol) or are being developed (cyclic carbonates from epoxides, selective pyrolysis of biomass). This book is an indispensable source for the researchers and professionals who work for a greener chemical industry. The chapters have been arranged to guide students through the design of new processes for more sustainable chemistry, using case studies as examples.

Croissance et Dveloppement au Cameroun: D'une Croissance Equilibre un Dveloppement Equitable is on the economy in Cameroon, and it is in line with sustainable development logic and its conditions in terms of economic, social and ecological sustainability. While following this logic, the book also focuses on two main dimensions, namely: economic and social dimensions. According to the book, the Cameroon economy is characterized by enormous resources and huge potentials; yet, the poverty level remains relatively very high. A combination of a short medium term and long term vision has become indispensable to achieving sustainable development. Sustainable development can be understood through several dimensions mainly economic, social and ecological. Ssustainable, in economic terms implies balance development through time and different sections/groups of the society. However, in social terms, sustainable development also implies equity, which translates to sharply reduction of poverty or completely elimination of poverty and maintaining such through time and generations. Finally, it is a question of development which aims at ensuring that growth acquired is not jeopardized by serious social imbalances at the detriment of current generations as well as future generations. Furthermore, the book focuses on environmental issues. Within this framework, as the main objective, the book articulates growth, equity and balanced growth. This volume, therefore, brings out these challenges and suggests appropriate strategies for addressing them.
