ward-winning historical drama starring Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. Rodeo cowboy and homophobic redneck Ron Woodroof (McConaughey)'s life is transformed drastically when a work-related accident results in him being diagnosed with AIDS. Given a life-expectancy of 30 days by his doctors, Ron initially continues his life in a state of denial but as the clock keeps ticking he becomes more and more interested in the background of the disease and its treatments.
Learning that FDA-unapproved drugs are freely available over the border in Mexico, he takes matters into his own hands and begins transporting them into the United States. As word gets out about Ron's new venture, he is introduced to the local homosexual community and together with his new transgendered friend Rayon (Leto) he establishes the 'Dallas Buyers Club' which offers treatments to those in need. However, with the success of his business comes the attention of the FDA and local drug enforcement and he is soon engaged in a battle with the authorities who want to shut down the club.
The film was nominated for six Academy Awards and won three, including Best Actor (McConaughey) and Best Supporting Actor (Leto). Both actors also received the corresponding accolades at the Golden Globes.
During the past two decades, revolutionary breakthroughs have
occurred in the understanding of ferroelectric materials, both from
the perspective of theory and experiment. First principles
approaches, including the Berry phase formulation of
ferroelectricity, now allow accurate, quantitative predictions of
material properties, and single crystalline thin films are now
available for fundamental studies of these materials. In addition,
the need for high dielectric constant insulators and nonvolatile
memories in semiconductor applications has motivated a renaissance
in the investigation of these materials. This book addresses the
paradigmatic shifts in understanding brought about by these
breakthroughs, including the consideration of novel fabrication
methods and nanoscale applications of these materials, and new
theoretical methods such as the effective Hamiltonian approach and
density functional theory.
This book brings together a diverse range of responses to China's
Marine Silk Road Initiative, which proposes to redraw the map of
Asia, particularly South Asia. China's 21st Century Maritime Silk
Road Initiative (MSRI) is a massive scheme to connect wide swaths
of East, Southeast, South, and West Asia through a dense web of
interconnected hard and soft infrastructure involving ports, roads,
logistics facilities, special industrial zones, and free trade and
investment agreements. This book will be invaluable for students of
Chinese foreign security and foreign economic policy, those
interested in South Asia including Indian foreign security and
economic policy as well as Indian relations with China, those
attentive to international economic developments in East and South
Asia, and those interested in the political and economic situation
in specific MSRI participant countries such as Pakistan, Maldives,
and Sri Lanka as well as their political and economic relations
with China.
The 1996 Carg se Summer Institute on Frontiers in Particle Physics
was organized by the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris (M.
Levy), the Ecole Nonnale SupCrieure, Paris (J. lliopoulos), the
Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (R. Gastmans), and the Universite
Catholique de Louvain (J.-M. Gerard), which, since 1975, have
joined their efforts and worked in common. It was the twelfth
Sunnner Institute on High Energy Physics organized jointly at Carg
se by three of these universities. The Standard Model for
fundamental interactions is constructed on two essential
ingredients: the gauge symmetry and the mass generation mechanism.
Now that the gauge theory aspect has been finnly established, the
new challenge for the young researchers in elementary particle
physics is the understanding of the origin of the masses. The
standard Higgs mechanism is believed to be responsible for
generating the masses of ALL fundamental particles. Professor D.
Treille discussed the prospects for Higgs boson search and
described the experimental determinations of the gauge boson
masses. The influence of the top quark mass on electroweak
processes has been emphasized by Professor J.L. Rosner, while
Professor M. Neubert introduced the heavy-quark effective theory
which allows you to get rid of heavy-quark masses. The theoretical
determinations of the light quark masses have been critically
analyzed by Professor H. Leutwyler. Professor A. Pich presented the
various experimental tests on lepton universality and Professor
R.L. MBssbauer reviewed our present knowledge on the neutrino
masses."
On 18 July 1943, one-hundred and twenty Jews were transported from
the concentration camp at Drancy to the Levitan furniture store
building in the middle of Paris. These were the first detainees of
three satellite camps (Levitan, Austerlitz, Bassano) in Paris.
Between July 1943 and August 1944, nearly eight hundred prisoners
spent a few weeks to a year in one of these buildings, previously
been used to store furniture, and were subjected to forced labor.
Although the history of the persecution and deportation of France's
Jews is well known, the three Parisian satellite camps have been
subjected to the silence of both memory and history. This lack of
attention by the most authoritative voices on the subject can
perhaps be explained by the absence of a collective memory or by
the marginal status of the Parisian detainees - the spouses of
Aryans, wives of prisoners of war, half-Jews. Still, the Parisian
camps did, and continue to this day, lack simple and
straightforward descriptions. This book is a much needed study of
these camps and is witness to how, sixty years after the events,
expressing this memory remains a complex, sometimes painful
process, and speaking about it a struggle.
This book analyzes the progress of the MSRI, highlights the
political and economic factors affecting its realization, and
offers insights into the political and economic implications of
China's endeavor. It focuses specifically on countries within
Africa and the Middle East to provide a basis for a substantive
examination of these issues in a manner sensitive to the milieu in
individual countries and relevant regions. It represents the final
volume in a well-received series on China's Maritime Silk Road
Initiative (MSRI), which, so far, includes books covering China's
MSRI and South Asia (Palgrave, 2018) and China's MSRI and Southeast
Asia (Palgrave, 2019). This book will interest scholars of China,
international relations, and the relevant regions, journalists, and
policymakers.
Multi-Threaded Object-Oriented MPI-Based Message Passing Interface:
The ARCH Library presents ARCH, a library built as an extension to
MPI. ARCH relies on a small set of programming abstractions that
allow the writing of well-structured multi-threaded parallel codes
according to the object-oriented programming style. ARCH has been
written with C++. The book describes the built-in classes, and
illustrates their use through several template application cases in
several fields of interest: Distributed Algorithms (global
completion detection, distributed process serialization), Parallel
Combinatorial Optimization (A* procedure), Parallel
Image-Processing (segmentation by region growing). It shows how new
application-level distributed data types - such as a distributed
tree and a distributed graph - can be derived from the built-in
classes. A feature of interest to readers is that both the library
and the application codes used for illustration purposes are
available via the Internet. The material can be downloaded for
installation and personal parallel code development on the reader's
computer system. ARCH can be run on Unix/Linux as well as Windows
NT-based platforms. Current installations include the IBM-SP2, the
CRAY-T3E, the Intel Paragon, PC-networks under Linux or Windows NT.
Multi-Threaded Object-Oriented MPI-Based Message Passing Interface:
The ARCH Library is aimed at scientists who need to implement
parallel/distributed algorithms requiring complicated local and/or
distributed control structures. It can also benefit
parallel/distributed program developers who wish to write codes in
the object-oriented style. The author has been using ARCH for
several years as a medium to teach parallel and network
programming. Teachers can employ the library for the same purpose
while students can use it for training. Although ARCH has been used
so far in an academic environment, it will be an effective tool for
professionals as well. Multi-Threaded Object-Oriented MPI-Based
Message Passing Interface: The ARCH Library is suitable as a
secondary text for a graduate level course on Data Communications
and Networks, Programming Languages, Algorithms and Computational
Theory and Distributed Computing and as a reference for researchers
and practitioners in industry.
This new edition is thoroughly updated to reflect developments in
the field and with recent example studies that focus on
considerations, challenges, and opportunities raised at all stages
of the research process by online questionnaires. There is also
expanded, detailed guidance on how to use the IRIS database and how
to clean, process, and analyze questionnaire data prior to
determining and reporting findings.
The book provides a unified presentation of algorithms for association rule and sequential pattern discovery. For both mining problems, the presentation relies on the lattice structure of the search space. All algorithms are built as processes running on this structure. Proving their properties takes advantage of the mathematical properties of the structure. Mining for association rules and sequential patterns is known to be a problem with large computational complexity. The issue of designing efficient parallel algorithms should be considered as critical. Most algorithms in the book are devised for both sequential and parallel execution. Parallel algorithm design takes advantage of the lattice structure of the search space. Partitioning is performed via lattice recursive bisection. Database partitioning is also used as an additional source of parallelism.Part of the motivation for writing this book was postgraduate teaching. Since the book only assumes elementary mathematical knowledge in the domains of lattices, combinatorial optimization, probability calculus, and statistics, it is fit for use by undergraduate students as well. The algorithms are described in a C-like pseudo programming language. The computations are shown in great detail. This makes the book also fit for use by implementers: computer scientists in many domains as well as industry engineers.
The publication of Hugo Baetens Beardsmore's book Bilingualism:
Basic Principles by Multilingual Matters in 1982 coincided with an
unprecedented upsurge of interest in bilingualism. A major reason
for this was the acknowledgement that bilingualism is far more
common than was previously thought, and perhaps even the norm. The
number of bilinguals at the turn of the third millennium is
probably greater than ever before and will continue to grow as a
result of the combined forces of globalisation, automatisation,
increased mobility and migration, and modernisation of foreign
language teaching. The contributions in this book prove that, given
the right conditions, bilingualism can confer distinct benefits
like intellectual, psychological, social, cultural and economic
improvement on the individual. The papers in this volume have been
written by leading scholars in the field of bilingualism and deal
with individual bilingualism, societal and educational phenomena,
addressing issues such as bilingual usage, acquisition, teaching,
and language planning and policy. The volume's major asset lies in
its diversity, not only in depth of investigation and in topical
variety but also in the range of languages and geographical regions
covered. Another important feature of the volume is its
multidisciplinary perspective. Among the contributors are
linguists, sociologists, psychologists and sociolinguists.
Surrogate Warfare explores the emerging phenomenon of "surrogate
warfare" in twenty-first century conflict. The popular notion of
war is that it is fought en masse by the people of one side versus
the other. But the reality today is that both state and non-state
actors are increasingly looking to shift the burdens of war to
surrogates. Surrogate warfare describes a patron's outsourcing of
the strategic, operational, or tactical burdens of warfare, in
whole or in part, to human and/or technological substitutes in
order to minimize the costs of war. This phenomenon ranges from
arming rebel groups, to the use of armed drones, to cyber
propaganda. Krieg and Rickli bring old, related practices such as
war by mercenary or proxy under this new overarching concept. Apart
from analyzing the underlying sociopolitical drivers that trigger
patrons to substitute or supplement military action, this book
looks at the intrinsic trade-offs between substitutions and control
that shapes the relationship between patron and surrogate.
Surrogate Warfare will be essential reading for anyone studying
contemporary conflict.
