In Shaping Place, founding principals Turan Duda, FAIA and Jeffrey
Paine, FAIA, are joined by the firm's four studio leaders to
discuss the evolution of their work and thematic underpinnings
since publication of their previous volume, Individual to
Collective, in 2013. This compilation of buildings spans diverse
typologies to illustrate how the firm's ideas on public space,
outdoor environments, evolving working and learning models, and
contextual sensitivity are universal to creating meaningful
architecture. With chapters focusing on design for wellness,
academia, the workplace and urban development, the volume presents
the realisation of the thematic roots discussed in Individual to
Collective across a diverse range of scales, material qualities,
structural systems and architectural palettes. Steve Dumez, FAIA,
of Eskew Dumez Ripple, provides perspective on the firm's work
within the larger lens of architectural practice.
Through the conceptual framework of five overlapping themes,
readers will consider the following issues:
Choreographed Experience. Just as globalization and cultural
conformity make the uniqueness of place more essential, so too does
our virtual connectedness call for a physical counterweight. The
work of Duda/Paine Architects explores how visual, auditory, and
tactile perception anchors an individual's physical experience and
intellectual understanding of his or her surroundings. Like
storytellers, choreographers, and directors, they design meaningful
sequences of movement and discovery that add layers of sensory
information, giving personal meaning to the architectural
experience.
Creating Context. Duda/Paine Architects often adapt urban
strategies to suburban and edge city settings, creating
destinations with a strong sense of place - even in the absence of
an existing architectural context of neighboring buildings,
sidewalks, and open spaces. Each of these projects uses multiple
buildings to strike a balance between built form and open space;
each contrasts man-made gardens with the natural landscape; and
each looks at the physical qualities of its site and surroundings
to inspire an appropriate architectural language.
Transformations. Progressive leaders in business, healthcare, and
education often aspire to cross disciplinary boundaries,
collaborate more effectively, and innovate more freely.
Architecture, like alchemy can effect transformation. Duda/Paine's
interactive and inclusive design process not only reflects their
clients' strategic visions but can also act as a catalyst to help
redefine how they live, work, play or learn. The projects in this
section establish new paradigms by bringing people together in ways
that stimulate fresh ideas and practices.
Skyline/Streetscape. A majority of the world's population now lives
in cities for the first time, making the tower typology more
crucial than ever. Towers make public gestures in the skyline and
the streetscape, acting at the scale of the city as well as the
more intimate scale of the human body. Whether seen from a distance
or experienced close-up, these projects become landmarks in the
city skyline while simultaneously responding to the characteristics
of the existing urban fabric and amplifying the vibrancy of its'
street life.
Public Rooms. The benefits of today's virtual connectedness and
increased mobility cannot replace the importance of physical
gathering places where we share experiences, build collective
memories, and see ourselves as part of a larger community. The
privatization that leads to suburban sprawl and gated communities
reinforces the architect's civic duty to provide public spaces that
counteract this tendency. Whether urban or suburban, indoors or
out, Duda Paine's public rooms nurture civic life by encouraging
social interaction through chance encounters and casual
conversations.
The purpose of this study is to test the efficacy of the CrossFit
fitness program and methodology to increase the physical fitness of
U.S. Army Soldiers. Over the past several years, the CrossFit
fitness program has gained popularity among U.S. Army Soldiers and
leaders. In unit's across the U.S. Army, CrossFit is replacing or
augmenting traditional physical training methods. CrossFit's
growing popularity in the U.S. Army begs the question, is CrossFit
an effective program and does it match the U.S. Army's physical
training requirements? Currently there exists a host of anecdotal
evidence claiming that the CrossFit program is effective. However,
to date, only one formal study within the U.S. Army has attempted
to add empirical evidence to these claims. Our study seeks to
contribute to the discussion by adding further analytical research
on the CrossFit program in hopes of helping U.S. Army leaders make
well-informed decisions regarding the future of U.S. Army physical
fitness training.
The colorful tale of the successful flowering of an obscure, ancient Eastern sect in the modern world.
In a single generation, Tibetan Buddhism developed from the faith of a remote mountain people, associated with bizarre, almost medieval, superstitions, to perhaps the most rapidly growing and celebrity-studded religion in the West.
Disaffected with other religious traditions yet searching for meaning, huge numbers of Americans have found their way to the wisdom of Tibetan lamas in exile. Earthy, humorous, commonsensical, and eccentric, these flamboyant teachers—larger-than-life characters like Lama Yeshe and Chogyma Trungpa—proved to be charismatic and gifted ambassadors for their ancient religion. So did two Western women, born in Brooklyn and London's East End, whose homegrown religious intuitions turned out to be identical with the most sophisticated Tibetan teachings, revealing them to be reincarnated lamas.
With great flair for both the sublime and the human, Jeffrey Paine narrates in page-turning, richly informative fashion how Tibetan Buddhism—rarified and sensual, mystical and commonsensical—became the ideal religion for a "post-religious" age. 15 photographs.
