In this era of globalization, International Law plays a significant
role in facing rapid development of various legal issues. Cultural
preservation has emerged as an important legal issue that should be
considered by States. This book consists of academic papers
presented and discussed during the 9th International Conference of
the Centre of International Law Studies (9th CILS Conference) held
in Malang, Indonesia, 2-3 October 2018. The title of the book
represents the major theme of the conference: "Culture and
International Law." It is argued that along with globalization,
cultural preservation is slowly ignored by States. Various papers
presented in the book cover five topics: cultural heritage;
cultural rights; culture and economic activity; culture and armed
conflict; and a general topic. The authors of the papers are
outstanding academics from various countries, Lithuania, United
States of America, Australia, Thailand and Indonesia. The
conference was organized by Universitas Indonesia in collaboration
with Brawijaya University. This book aims to give a useful
contribution to the existing literature on International Law,
specifically focussing on cultural issues from the perspective of
cultural heritage and rights, economic as well as armed conflict.
The first book of its kind, this discography covers the history of
steel band and pan music on recordings from their beginnings. In
more than 775 entries, it comprises all known recordings on
phonograph records, cassettes, and compact disks in which one or
more steel pans is featured or used in an accompanying role. This
includes steel bands of any size and configuration, pan soloists,
and small ensembles in a variety of settings. For each entry,
information is provided on the location of the recording
session/studio, release date, record company catalog number, and
complete contents. Indexes facilitate access to artists,
arrangers/conductors/musical directors, record titles, years of
release, and compositions; and appendices provide additional
information on record manufacturers and distributors, calypsonians,
and sources. A reference bibliography completes the work. The
creation, teaching, and performance of most of othe pan music of
the past belongs to an oral tradition. There is therefore little
written preservation of this work and audio recordings often
provide the only documentation of the art of many gifted composers,
arrangers, performers, and tuners. These recordings constitute a
primary source of information regarding past performance practices,
evolving playing styles and techniques, and pan tuning innovations.
While serving as a guide for locating these recordings, this
discography also will function as a research tool to aid
researchers into many other aspects of the steel pan movement. As
such, it will be a valuable resource for scholars, performing
artists, educators, instrument builders, composers, arrangers, and
enthusiasts.
A revealing look at the changing role of churches in the decades
after the American Revolution. Most Americans today would not think
of their local church as a site for arbitration and would probably
be hesitant to bring their property disputes, moral failings, or
personal squabbles to their kin and neighbors for judgment. But
from the Revolutionary Era through the mid-nineteenth century, many
Protestants imbued local churches with immense authority. Through
their ritual practice of discipline, churches insisted that
brethren refrain from suing each other before "infidels" at local
courts and claimed jurisdiction over a range of disputes: not only
moral issues such as swearing, drunkenness, and adultery but also
matters more typically considered to be under the purview of common
law and courts of equity, including disputes over trespass, land,
probate, slave warranty, and theft. In Law in American
Meetinghouses, Jeffrey Thomas Perry explores the ways that ordinary
Americans-Black and white, enslaved and free-understood and created
law in their local communities, uncovering a vibrant marketplace of
authority in which church meetinghouses played a central role in
maintaining their neighborhoods' social peace. Churches were once
prominent sites for the creation of local law and in this period
were a primary arena in which civil and religious authority
collided and shaped one another. When church discipline failed, the
wronged parties often pushed back, and their responses highlight
the various forces that ultimately hindered that venue's ability to
effectively arbitrate disputes between members. Relying primarily
on a deep reading of church records and civil case files, Perry
examines how legal transformations, an expanding market economy,
and religious controversy led churchgoers to reimagine their
congregations' authority. By the 1830s, unable to resolve doctrinal
quibbles within the fellowship, church factions turned to state
courts to secure control over their meetinghouses, often demanding
that judges wade into messy ecclesiastical disputes. Tracking
changes in disciplinary rigor in Kentucky Baptist churches from
that state's frontier period through 1845, and looking beyond
statutes and court decrees, Law in American Meetinghouses is a
fresh take on church-state relations. Ultimately, it highlights an
oft-forgotten way that Americans subtly repositioned religious
institutions alongside state authority.
Thirty years have passed since President Nixon's resignation, yet,
the impact of the "Watergate" scandal continues to affect the
institutional power of the American chief executive. Through
documents and analytical essays, this timely collection places the
Watergate crisis in perspective, providing a cogent and balanced
analysis of the development and consequences of an event that has
overshadowed Nixon's legacy and permanently altered the country's
perceptions of politics. Watergate threatened the very
constitutional order of the nation, and continues to this day to
affect the public's attitudes about the presidency, America's
political culture, the mass media's coverage of politics, the
separation of powers, and the investigation of high-level
misconduct in the federal government. Twelve topical essays written
by presidential scholars cover these themes and examine the impact
of the crisis over time. Primary source materials, including
transcripts from oral interviews, Nixon's speeches, letters, the
infamous Watergate tapes, excerpts from testimony and hearings in
Congress, the proposed articles of impeachment, and more are all
put in context with explanatory headnotes. Watergate and the
Resignation of Richard Nixon will explain: How public opinion and
attitudes about politics changed after Watergate How the balance of
power between the three branches of government has been altered by
the crisis How succeeding presidents have been affected by the
legacy of Watergate Why mass media coverage of politics changed
after Watergate What impact the crisis had on America's relations
with the rest of the world.

is one of the best novellas I've read all year. Jeffrey Thomas is
at his best in this eerie story following a group of ten people
(five women and five men) taking part in a mysterious
experiment...The mysteries are enticing, and Thomas brings them
together for an ending that is sure to linger long in the minds of
readers." - Justin Steele, THE ARKHAM DIGEST
In 1893, the Guests attempt their first contact with the human
race. Families go mad. Parents commit suicide. A president is
assassinated. By 1918, in the bleak boneland of the 20th Century,
human assassins commit atrocities and global wars are waged to sate
the appetites of the Guests. John Board is a crime scene
photographer, whose nightmarish images of human destruction are
used as titillating entertainment. Board's future is tied in with
these unseen, unfathomable forces -- and so is his past. America is
drowning in a sea of blood as flashbulbs click and movie cameras
roll. The Guests are here to stay. BONELAND is a tale of a
not-so-alternate history...a story of horror, science fiction, and
the surreal by Jeffrey Thomas, acclaimed author of PUNKTOWN and
LETTERS FROM HADES.
Punktown's health agents are charged with keeping the public safe
from infectious disease. Between inter-planetary travel,
super-mutant strains of bacteria and criminal genetic manipulation
they certainly keep busy. But for health agent Montgomery Black
work is about to consume his life. The problem is a highly
contagious and extremely deadly STD, mutstav six-seventy and cases
are showing up everywhere. While trying to prevent the spread of
the disease Black could lose everything that's important to him but
there's no ignoring the suspicion that something far more sinister
than the impartial hand of nature is behind the spread of this
epidemic.

Jeffrey Thomas' collection Punktown explored the streets and back
alleys of a futuristic and nightmarish urbanscape in a series of
unconnected short stories. In Punktown: Third Eye, Thomas has
teleported authors Simon Logan, Jonathan Lyons, Charlee Jacob, Paul
G. Tremblay, Michael McCarty, Mark McLaughlin, Garrett Peck, Thomas
Andrew Hughes, and Scott Thomas into the city to pen their own
tales of its citizens, aliens, mutations, and sentient machines.
These talented authors bring a new perspective, a personal vision,
a third eye view to the phantasmetropolis that is Punktown.
It's the final day of the season for the annual Punktown Fair and
excitement is high. For the couple in charge, Del and Sophi Kahn,
it's a bittersweet day of transition. Little do they realize the
trials they will face and how severely this one day will test their
relationship. In fact, closing day seems to be a catalyst for many
Punktown residents; drawing them in, stirring them up and letting
them loose on each other. This roller coaster tale builds to a peak
of expectation then plummets, twisting and turning, a breathtaking
juggernaut to the final pages with plenty of screams and giggles
along the way.
