Tom Hanks stars in this gangster drama set in the American Midwest during the 1930s. Twelve-year-old Michael Sullivan Jr is curious about what his father (Hanks) does for a living, and one night decides to hide in his car as he goes off to work. It soon transpires that the elder Sullivan is a hitman for the mob, and when young Michael witnesses a killing carried out by the gangster boss' son Connor (Daniel Craig), it starts off a chain of events which will mark Michael's life forever. Co-starring Paul Newman and Jude Law and directed by Sam Mendes.
Patrick Melrose is a new kind of family saga which takes a scathing and sardonic view of the upper-classes, shining an unforgiving light on the privilege, greed cruelty and vulnerabilities that lie within their ranks. Played to perfection by Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick himself is many things: an aristocratic addict, a rakish and outrageously funny playboy, but he is also a man living as a victim of the sins of his parents. Based on the celebrated series of semi-autobiographical novels by Edward St Aubyn, this intelligent, beautifully told 5-episode miniseries follows Patrick as he embarks on a harrowing yet humorous decades-spanning odyssey to come to terms with the effects of childhood trauma.
Darkly comic indie drama directed by Noah Baumbach. Ben Stiller stars as Roger Greenberg, a 40-year-old man with little direction or purpose in his life. After suffering an emotional breakdown, he goes to house-sit for his brother in their hometown in California with the express intention of 'doing nothing for a while'. There he makes a few painfully self-conscious attempts to reconnect with old friends and lovers, and falls into a relationship of sorts with his brother's 26-year-old personal assistant, Florence (Greta Gerwig).
Brooding psychological thriller, starring Christian Bale. Trevor Reznik (Bale) is a factory machine-operator who is suffering from crippling insomnia. Ostracised from the other men at the factory, Reznik starts finding threatening notes and begins to fear that someone is trying to kill him. Is his paranoia part of his psychological breakdown, or is it possibly justified?
