Jesse's Lineage - The Legendary Lives of David, Jesus, and Jesse James (Hardcover, New): Jennifer L Koosed, Robert... Jesse's Lineage - The Legendary Lives of David, Jesus, and Jesse James (Hardcover, New)
Jennifer L Koosed, Robert Seesengood
R4,034 Discovery Miles 40 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Jesse's Lineage" explores the interconnections between David, Jesus, and Jesse James. All three of these figures evoked complicated and conflicted reactions from their contemporaries - considered criminals by some, saviors by others. David lives the life of a bandit while on the run from Saul; Jesus dies the death of a bandit alongside other bandits; Jesse James is the paragon of the bandit in the American West and yet his life and death is also understood in biblical terms. Iron Age Judah, Roman Galilee, and Reconstruction era Missouri alike invoke the context of colonial "territories" and areas of resistance. Such contexts give birth to bandits, the heroes of the subaltern. After their deaths, David, Jesus, and Jesse James live on thorough equally complicated and conflicted textual, ritual, and cultural memories. Their stories intertwine through reference and allusion as Jesus' mission is understood in terms of David's promise, and Jesse's death is understood in terms of Jesus' betrayal. The biography of each figure is further complicated by the processes of folk memory and oral transmission.

(Per)mutations of Qohelet - Reading the Body in the Book (Hardcover, New): Jennifer L Koosed (Per)mutations of Qohelet - Reading the Body in the Book (Hardcover, New)
Jennifer L Koosed
R4,688 Discovery Miles 46 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

(Per)mutations of Qohelet explores the question, Who is Qohelet? Rather than peering behind or through the text to answer this question in terms of authorship, Koosed analyzes the identity that is created through the words on the page. The text is not a transparent medium connecting reader with author; instead, it is an opaque body - it has weight, substance, skin. Koosed begins with an analysis of the ways in which words construct identities and the reasons why words can affect us so profoundly, relying primarily on the work of Judith Butler and Elaine Scarry. She then explores autobiography and how the genre of autobiography - as reconfigured by Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida - relates to Qohelet. These two chapters then set the framework for what follows: an analysis of the various bodily organs and sensations contained within the book of Qohelet. The body is embedded in the text through the naming of body parts (eye, hand, heart). And this same body is encoded in form, structure, and syntax, so that the text becomes a body with organs, systems, and even a life of its own. The book is a body and the book speaks of bodies. It speaks of the body's organs and senses; it concerns itself with the pleasures and pains of the body, the gendered body, the dying body. Finally, the ritual body is highlighted in the final passage of this enigmatic book.

Judith (Hardcover): Jennifer L Koosed, Robert Paul Seesengood Judith (Hardcover)
Jennifer L Koosed, Robert Paul Seesengood; Edited by Barbara E Reid; Volume editing by Amy-Jill Levine
R1,419 Discovery Miles 14 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The striking scene of Judith cutting off Holofernes's head with his own sword in his own bed has inspired the imaginations of readers for millennia. But there is more to her story than just this climactic act and more to her character than just beauty and violence. This volume offers a comprehensive examination of gender ideologies in the book of Judith, from the hyper-masculine machinations of war and empire to the dynamics of class in Judith's relationship with her enslaved handmaid. Overall, this commentary investigates the book of Judith through a feminist lens, informed by critical masculinity studies, queer theory, and reception criticism.

Bible and Theory - Essays in Biblical Interpretation in Honor of Stephen D. Moore (Hardcover): K. Jason Coker, Scott S. Elliott Bible and Theory - Essays in Biblical Interpretation in Honor of Stephen D. Moore (Hardcover)
K. Jason Coker, Scott S. Elliott; Contributions by George Aichele, A.K.M. Adam, Janice Capel Anderson, …
R2,480 Discovery Miles 24 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Inspired by and engaging with the provocative and prolific work of Stephen D. Moore, Bible and Theory showcases some of the most current thinking emerging at the intersections of critical methods with biblical texts. The result is a plurality of readings that deconstruct customary disciplinary boundaries. These chapters, written by a wide range of biblical scholars, collectively argue by demonstration for the necessity and benefits of biblical criticism inflected with queer theory, literary criticism, postmodernism, cultural studies, and more. Bible and Theory: Essays in Biblical Interpretation in Honor of Stephen D. Moore invites the reader to rethink what constitutes the Bible and to reconsider what we are doing when we read and interpret it.
