Representations of the Natural World in Old English Poetry (Hardcover): Jennifer Neville Representations of the Natural World in Old English Poetry (Hardcover)
Jennifer Neville
R2,740 Discovery Miles 27 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines descriptions of the natural world in a wide range of Old English poetry. Jennifer Neville describes the physical conditions experienced by the Anglo-Saxons and argues that the poetic descriptions were not a reflection of these conditions but a literary device used by Anglo-Saxons to define more important issues, such as the state of humanity, the creation and maintenance of society, the power of individuals, the relationship between God and creation, and the power of writing to control information.

Medieval Theatre Performance - Actors, Dancers, Automata and their Audiences (Hardcover): Philip Butterworth, Katie Normington Medieval Theatre Performance - Actors, Dancers, Automata and their Audiences (Hardcover)
Philip Butterworth, Katie Normington; Contributions by Bart Ramakers, Claire Sponsler, David N. Klausner, …
R3,313 Discovery Miles 33 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Investigations into the "realities" of staging dramatic performances, of a variety of kinds, in the middle ages. We know little about the nature of medieval performance and have generally been content to think of it in relation to more modern productions, not least because of the sparsity of existing evidence. Consequently, whilst much research has been undertaken into its contexts, there has been relatively little scholarly investigation into the conditions of perfomance itself. This book seeks to address this omission. It looks at such questions as the nature of performance in theatre/dance/puppetry/automata; the performed qualities of such events; the conventions of performed work; what took place in the act of performing; and the relationships between performers and witnesses, andwhat conditioned them. PHILIP BUTTERWORTH Is Visiting Research Fellow in the Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of Leeds, where he was formerly Reader in Medieval Theatre and Dean for Research; KATIE NORMINGTON is Senior Vice Principal (Academic) at Royal Holloway, University of London, where she is also Professor of Drama. Contributors: Kathryn Emily Dickason, Leanne Groeneveld, Max Harris, David Klausner, Femke Kramer, Jennifer Nevile, Nerida Newbigin, Tom Pettitt, Bart Ramakers, Claire Sponsler.

Riddles at Work in the Early Medieval Tradition - Words, Ideas, Interactions (Hardcover): Megan Cavell, Jennifer Neville Riddles at Work in the Early Medieval Tradition - Words, Ideas, Interactions (Hardcover)
Megan Cavell, Jennifer Neville
R2,324 Discovery Miles 23 240 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Capitalising on developments in the field over the past decade, Riddles at work provides an up-to-date microcosm of research on the early medieval riddle tradition. The book presents a wide range of traditional and experimental methodologies. The contributors treat the riddles both as individual poems and as parts of a tradition, but, most importantly, they address Latin and Old English riddles side-by-side, bringing together texts that originally developed in conversation with each other but have often been separated by scholarship. Together, the chapters reveal that there is no single, right way to read these texts but rather a multitude of productive paths. This book will appeal to students and scholars of early medieval studies. It contains new as well as established voices, including Jonathan Wilcox, Mercedes Salvador-Bello and Jennifer Neville. -- .

Footprints of the Dance: An Early Seventeenth-Century Dance Master's Notebook (Hardcover): Jennifer Nevile Footprints of the Dance: An Early Seventeenth-Century Dance Master's Notebook (Hardcover)
Jennifer Nevile
R4,253 Discovery Miles 42 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Footprints of the Dance - An Early Seventeenth-Century Dance Master's Notebook by Jennifer Nevile provides new, fascinating and detailed information on the life of an early-seventeenth-century dance master in Brussels. The dance master's handwritten notebook contains unique material: a canon of dance figures and instructions for an exhibition with a pike; as well as signatures and general descriptions of his students, ballet plots and music associated with dancing. Reproduced for the first time are facsimile images of all the dance-related material, with transcriptions and translations of the ballet plots and instructions for the pike exhibition. The dance master is revealed as an active choreographer and performer, with strong ties to the French court musical establishment, and interested in fireworks and alchemy.

Dance, Spectacle, and the Body Politick, 1250-1750 (Paperback): Jennifer Nevile Dance, Spectacle, and the Body Politick, 1250-1750 (Paperback)
Jennifer Nevile
R901 Discovery Miles 9 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

From the mid-13th to the mid-18th century the ability to dance was an important social skill for both men and women. Dance performances were an integral part of court ceremonies and festivals and, in the 17th and 18th centuries, of commercial theatrical productions. Whether at court or in the public theater danced spectacles were multimedia events that required close collaboration among artists, musicians, designers, engineers, and architects as well as choreographers. In order to fully understand these practices, it is necessary to move beyond a consideration of dance alone, and to examine it in its social context. This original collection brings together the work of 12 scholars from the disciplines of dance and music history. Their work presents a picture of dance in society from the late medieval period to the middle of the 18th century and demonstrates how dance practices during this period participated in the intellectual, artistic, and political cultures of their day.

The Eloquent Body - Dance and Humanist Culture in Fifteenth-Century Italy (Hardcover): Jennifer Nevile The Eloquent Body - Dance and Humanist Culture in Fifteenth-Century Italy (Hardcover)
Jennifer Nevile
R1,188 Discovery Miles 11 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"This book adds an entirely new dimension to the consideration of Humanism and Italian culture. It will make a welcome addition to the field of cultural studies by broadening the subject to consider an important source of information that has been previously overlooked." Timothy McGee

The Eloquent Body offers a history and analysis of court dancing during the Renaissance, within the context of Italian Humanism. Each chapter addresses different philosophical, social, or intellectual aspects of dance during the 15th century. Some topics include issues of economic class, education, and power; relating dance treatises to the ideals of Humanism and the meaning of the arts; ideas of the body as they relate to elegance, nobility, and ethics; the intellectual history of dance based on contemporaneous readings of Pythagoras and Plato; and a comparison of geometric dance structures to geometric order in Humanist architecture."

Representations of the Natural World in Old English Poetry (Paperback, New ed): Jennifer Neville Representations of the Natural World in Old English Poetry (Paperback, New ed)
Jennifer Neville
R1,536 Discovery Miles 15 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines descriptions of the natural world in a wide range of Old English poetry. Jennifer Neville describes the physical conditions experienced by the Anglo-Saxons - the animals, diseases, landscapes, seas and weather with which they had to contend. She argues that poetic descriptions of these elements were not a reflection of the existing physical conditions but a literary device used by Anglo-Saxons to define more important issues: the state of humanity, the creation and maintenance of society, the power of individuals, the relationship between God and creation and the power of writing to control information. Examples of contemporary literature in other languages are used to provide a sense of Old English poetry's particular approach, which incorporated elements from Germanic, Christian and classical sources. The result of this approach was not a consistent cosmological scheme but a rather contradictory vision which reveals much about how the Anglo-Saxons viewed themselves.
