Prototyping across the Disciplines - Designing Better Futures (Paperback): Jennifer Roberts-Smith, Stan Ruecker, Milena... Prototyping across the Disciplines - Designing Better Futures (Paperback)
Jennifer Roberts-Smith, Stan Ruecker, Milena Radzikowska
R1,013 Discovery Miles 10 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

If people from different fields are going to work together on projects, then they need to begin to understand each other. They can be separated by the words they use, the ways they work and how they think. However, in many fields there is common ground, in the attempts to create what is sometimes called inventive knowledge. These fields progress not only by understanding increasingly more about what already exists, but by making guesses about possible better futures. The guesses consist of small forays into that future, using strategies that are variously called learning through making, research through design or, more simply, prototyping. While traditionally associated primarily with industrial design, and more recently with software development, prototyping is now used as an important tool in areas ranging from materials engineering to landscape architecture to the digital humanities. This book collects current theories and methods of prototyping in a dozen disciplines, illustrating them through case studies of actual projects, whether in industry or the classroom. This edited collection aims to provide a context, a theoretical framework and a set of methodologies for interdisciplinary collaboration in design. Each chapter offers a different disciplinary perspective on prototyping, providing a case study as a point of comparison for identifying commonalities and divergences in current practices. Contributions are from a group of scholars with worldwide experience of working and presenting in design, and who are currently based in Canada, the United States, Chile and Brazil. This book isn't just about design across the disciplines, it is about how prototyping works in different disciplines. Prototyping is a crucial part of the design process, and a practice used by creators from all design disciplines, from architects and engineers, to industrial and service designers, to test a concept or process and evaluate an idea. Much research has been published on prototyping in design; what makes this new book unique is the cross disciplinary nature, showing designers how they can learn from various approaches to improve their skills. Disciplines discussed include post-human design, theatre, tabletop game design, landscape architecture and arts entrepreneurship. Primarily of interest to design scholars and practitioners with an interest in integrative design. Undergraduates and graduate students in design, HCI (human-computer interaction) and the digital humanities. Textbook potential.

Expanding Horizons in Open and Distance Learning (Paperback): Jennifer Roberts, Mutuota Kigotho, Adrian Stagg Expanding Horizons in Open and Distance Learning (Paperback)
Jennifer Roberts, Mutuota Kigotho, Adrian Stagg
R1,202 Discovery Miles 12 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book brings together a collection of articles that were presented at the Open and Distance Learning Association of Australia (ODLAA) conference in February 2017. The authors share the common agenda of creating meaningful research in the field of distance education. Distinct themes in educational research including open, distance, and flexible education emerged from the conference and this collection addresses each of these themes. The themes explored include: teaching and learning playing an integral role in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) research; ways in which technology is used in the teaching of science subjects; how technology is applied in everyday lives, specifically in the areas of transport, accommodation, and in ordering food; the important and often neglected area of research related to staff development and competencies; research regarding Open Educational Practices (OEP); and the importance of distance education in developing countries, where online interaction is often a challenge - largely because of the lack of stable internet connectivity. This book was originally published as a special issue of Distance Education.

Shakespeare's Language in Digital Media - Old Words, New Tools (Paperback): Janelle Jenstad, Mark Kaethler, Jennifer... Shakespeare's Language in Digital Media - Old Words, New Tools (Paperback)
Janelle Jenstad, Mark Kaethler, Jennifer Roberts-Smith
R1,412 Discovery Miles 14 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The authors of this book ask how digital research tools are changing the ways in which practicing editors historicize Shakespeare's language. Scholars now encounter, interpret, and disseminate Shakespeare's language through an increasing variety of digital resources, including online editions such as the Internet Shakespeare Editions (ISE), searchable lexical corpora such as the Early English Books Online-Text Creation Partnership (EEBO-TCP) or the Lexicons of Early Modern English (LEME) collections, high-quality digital facsimiles such as the Folger Shakespeare Library's Digital Image Collection, text visualization tools such as Voyant, apps for reading and editing on mobile devices, and more. What new insights do these tools offer about the ways Shakespeare's words made meaning in their own time? What kinds of historical or historicizing arguments can digital editions make about Shakespeare's language? A growing body of work in the digital humanities allows textual critics to explore new approaches to editing in digital environments, and enables language historians to ask and answer new questions about Shakespeare's words. The authors in this unique book explicitly bring together the two fields of textual criticism and language history in an exploration of the ways in which new tools are expanding our understanding of Early Modern English.

Jane Broadbent, Michael Dietrich, Jennifer Roberts
R4,398 Discovery Miles 43 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Professions and professional activity are undergoing dramatic changes as we approach the millennium. This volume presents an overview of conceptual issues and considers the practical issues facing professionals today. It has two key objectives: to understand the nature of the changes in professional activity; and to see this restructuring in the context of wider socio-economic processes. Examining the professional areas of medicine, education, law and accountancy, the authors illustrate how the nature of professional activity is changing, and how decision making power is being shifted away from the holders of specialized knowledge and towards clients and managers. Although this might seem to signify an end to traditional notions of professionalism involving trust, responsibility and self-organization, they argue that this does not necessarily mean an end to professionalism itself, but rather a rethinking of its significance and functioning. This process is of central importance to political economists, sociologists, organization and management theorists, and anyone who is trying to understand the significance of professional organization in modern British society.

English in Global Aviation - Context, Research, and Pedagogy (Hardcover): Eric Friginal, Elizabeth Mathews, Jennifer Roberts English in Global Aviation - Context, Research, and Pedagogy (Hardcover)
Eric Friginal, Elizabeth Mathews, Jennifer Roberts
R3,227 Discovery Miles 32 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Taking readers step-by-step through the major issues surrounding the use of English in the global aviation industry, this book provides a clear introduction to turning research into practice in the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), specifically Aviation English, and a valuable case study of applied linguistics in action. With both cutting-edge research and evidence-based practice, the critical role of English in aviation is explored across a variety of contexts, including the national and global policies impacting training and language assessment for pilots, air-traffic controllers, ground staff, and students. English in Global Aviation teaches readers how to apply linguistic research to real world, practical settings. The book uses a range of corpus-based findings and related research to provide an effective analysis of the language needs of the aviation industry and an extended look at linguistic principles in action. Readers are presented with case studies, transcriptions, radiotelephony, and a clear breakdown of the common vocabulary and phrasal patterns of aviation discourse. Students and teachers of both linguistics and aviation will discover the requirements and challenges of successful intercultural communication in this industry, as well as insights into how to teach, develop, and assess aviation English language courses.
