Dieses Buch bietet einen umfassenden UEberblick uber die Forschung zum zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagement in Ostdeutschland. Eine vertiefende Analyse der Daten der ersten beiden Wellen des Freiwilligensurveys (Ehrenamt, Freiwilligenarbeit und Burgerschaftliches Engagement) prasentiert neue Erkenntnisse uber die Besonderheiten der Umfeld- und Zugangsbedingungen der ostdeutschen Zivilgesellschaft. Daruber hinaus wird ein umfassender UEberblick uber die vorliegenden qualitativen Studien zu diesem Themenbereich gegeben. Durch die Zusammenschau west- und ostdeutscher Studien werden die jeweiligen Besonderheiten des Engagements herausgearbeitet. In den folgenden Kapiteln werden zunachst die hiermit verbundenen politischen Herausforderungen diskutiert und politische Handlungsempfehlungen zur Entwicklung der Zivilgesellschaft in Ostdeutschland vorgeschlagen. Abschliessend werden die zentralen Ergebnisse einer Regionalstudie zu "partizipativen Kommunen" in Ostdeutschland und den hier realisierten erfolgreichen Vernetzungsformen zwischen kommunaler Politik und Verwaltung, Wirtschaft und Zivilgesellschaft vorgestellt. Im Anhang findet sich ein umfangreicher Leitfaden, der von lokalen Akteuren als Arbeitshilfe bei der Entwicklung lokaler Strategien zur Entwicklung der Gesellschaft genutzt werden kann.
