Reinventing Medieval Liturgy in Victorian England - Thomas Frederick Simmons and the Lay Folks' Mass Book: David Jasper,... Reinventing Medieval Liturgy in Victorian England - Thomas Frederick Simmons and the Lay Folks' Mass Book
David Jasper, Jeremy J. Smith
R2,318 Discovery Miles 23 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 1879, the late medieval poem now known as The Lay Folks' Mass Book - a guide to the Mass -- was edited for the Early English Text Society by Canon Thomas Frederick Simmons. It remains the standard edition of what, to modern tastes, can seem a simple work of conventional Middle English devotion. Yet, as this book shows, the poem had a remarkable afterlife. The authors demonstrate how Simmons' interest in and presentation of the text was related profoundly to contemporary concerns and heated debates about worship in the Church of England, at a time when Anglican clergymen could be imprisoned for their ritual practices. Simmons, educated at Oxford during the height of the Oxford Movement, was recognised by contemporaries as a leading authority on liturgy, a topic that troubled prime ministers as well as archbishops, and the authors bring out the ways in which Simmons himself used his medievalist researches as the basis for what was to be the most important attempt at Prayer Book revision between the Reformation and the twentieth century.

Older Scots: A Linguistic Reader (Paperback, Annotated Ed): Jeremy J. Smith Older Scots: A Linguistic Reader (Paperback, Annotated Ed)
Jeremy J. Smith
R763 Discovery Miles 7 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A full introduction to Older Scots language and literature, with a wide selection of copiously annotated texts from the period. This book enables both students and more advanced scholars to develop a comprehensive understanding of Older Scots, the form of Scots which survives in records up to around 1700. It provides the means of understanding the language's essential characteristics, and enables readers to engage with the fascinating textual and linguistic problems which it presents. The volume contains an extensive set of annotated texts from the period, inviting closer engagement with the detail of the language, which are preceded by a comprehensive introduction to and discussion of the subject; it also looks at the linguistic detail (in the broadest sense) of the reception and afterlife of medieval andearly modern Scottish texts. Those interested in literary form in Older Scottish literature will find it a "kit" for stylistic analysis; book historians will appreciate the detailed studies of processes of production and reception, and be reminded of the importance of integrating disciplines such as textual criticism, codicology, paleography and philology; and for linguists, there is access to an unrivalled body of up-to-date textual information, previously hard to find in a single place. Jeremy J. Smith is Professor of English Philology, University of Glasgow.

A Companion to Gower (Paperback): Sian Echard A Companion to Gower (Paperback)
Sian Echard; Contributions by A.G. Rigg, Ardis Butterfield, Derek Pearsall, Diane Watt, …
R966 R886 Discovery Miles 8 860 Save R80 (8%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An introduction to Gower and his work, focusing on his sources, historical context and literary tradition; special attention is paid to Confessio Amantis. Chaucer, Gower and Lydgate were the three poets of their time considered to have founded the English poetic tradition. Gower, like Lydgate, eventually fell victim to changing tastes but is now enjoying renewed scholarly attention.Current work in manuscript studies, linguistic studies, vernacularity, translation, politics, and the contexts of literary production has found a rich source in Gower's trilingual, learned, and politically engaged corpus. This Companion to Gower offers essays by scholars from Britain and North America, covering Gower's works in all three of his languages; they consider his relationships to his literary sources, and to his social, material and historical contexts; and they offer an overview of the manuscript, linguistic, and editorial traditions. Five essays concentrate specifically on the Confessio Amantis, Gower's major Middle English work, reading it in terms of its relationship to vernacular and classical models, its poetic style, and its treatment of such themes as politics, kingship, gender, sexuality, authority, authorship and self-governance. A reference bibliography, arranged as a chronologyof criticism, concludes the volume. Contributors J.A. BURROW, ARDIS BUTTERFIELD, NATHALIE COHEN, E.H. COOPER, SIAN ECHARD, ROBERT EPSTEIN, JOHN HINES, EDWARD MOORE, DEREK PEARSALL, RUSSELL PECK, A.G. RIGG, SIMON ROFFEY, JEREMY J. SMITH, DIANE WATT, WINTHROP WETHERBEE, ROBERT F. YEAGER. SIAN ECHARD is associate professor, Department of English, University of British Columbia. The Companion can serve as an introduction to Gower and his works for the advanced undergraduate or graduate student, and the essays will also be of interest to experts in Middle English studies and in Gower.

Charles d'Orleans' English Aesthetic - The Form, Poetics, and Style of Fortunes Stabilnes (Hardcover): R.d. Perry,... Charles d'Orleans' English Aesthetic - The Form, Poetics, and Style of Fortunes Stabilnes (Hardcover)
R.d. Perry, Mary-Jo Arn; Contributions by Ad Putter, Andrea Denny-Brown, B. S. W. Barootes, …
R2,476 Discovery Miles 24 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

New investigations into Charles d'Orleans' under-rated poem, its properties and its qualities. The compilation Fortunes Stabilnes, the English poetry Charles d'Orleans wrote in the course of his twenty-five year captivity in England after Agincourt, requires a larger lens than that of Chaucerianism, through which it has most often been viewed. A fresh view from another perspective, one that attends to form and style, as well as to the poet's French traditions, reveals a more conceptually complex and innovative kind of poetry than we have seen until now. The essays collected here reassess him in the light of recent work in Middle English studies. They detail those qualities that make his text one of the most accomplished and moving of the late Middle Ages: Charles's use of English, his metrical play, his felicity with formes fixes lyrics, his innovative use of the dits structure and lyric sequences, and finally, above all, his ability to write beautiful poetry. Overall, they bring out the underappreciated contribution made by Charles to the canon of English poetry.

New Perspectives on Middle English Texts - A Festschrift for R.A. Waldron (Hardcover): Susan Powell, Jeremy J. Smith New Perspectives on Middle English Texts - A Festschrift for R.A. Waldron (Hardcover)
Susan Powell, Jeremy J. Smith; Contributions by A.S.G. Edwards, Derek Pearsall, Elton D Higgs, …
R1,964 Discovery Miles 19 640 Out of stock

The essays in this volume celebrate the career of the distinguished medievalist, Ronald Waldron. Fittingly, they focus on the Middle English alliterative tradition, but do not exclude material in other areas. Acting as a linking theme is a concern with the relationship of texts to their contexts, whether historical, philosophical, linguistic, or codicological. Topics discussed include feasting in Middle English alliterative poetry; setting and context in the works of the Gawain-poet; Henryson's Testament of Cresseid; Layamon; and Middle English verse in Chronicles. Contributors: MALCOLM ANDREW, ROSAMUND ALLEN, RALPH HANNA, SUSAN POWELL, JANE ROBERTS, JEREMY SMITH, DEREK PEARSALL, N.F. BLAKE, JULIA BOFFEY, A.S.G. EDWARDS, JANET COWEN, ROGER DAHOOD, ELTON D. HIGGS, GEORGE KANE.

Transforming Early English - The Reinvention of Early English and Older Scots (Paperback): Jeremy J. Smith Transforming Early English - The Reinvention of Early English and Older Scots (Paperback)
Jeremy J. Smith
R974 Discovery Miles 9 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Transforming Early English shows how historical pragmatics can offer a powerful explanatory framework for the changes medieval English and Older Scots texts undergo, as they are transmitted over time and space. The book argues that formal features such as spelling, script and font, and punctuation - often neglected in critical engagement with past texts - relate closely to dynamic, shifting socio-cultural processes, imperatives and functions. This theme is illustrated through numerous case-studies in textual recuperation, ranging from the reinvention of Old English poetry and prose in the later medieval and early modern periods, to the eighteenth-century 'vernacular revival' of literature in Older Scots.

R2,843 Discovery Miles 28 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Written by an interdisciplinary team of scholars, this book offers novel perspectives on the history of medical writing and scientific thought-styles by examining patterns of change and reception in genres, discourse, and lexis in the period 1500-1820. Each chapter demonstrates in detail how changing textual forms were closely tied to major multi-faceted social developments: industrialisation, urbanisation, expanding trade, colonialization, and changes in communication, all of which posed new demands on medical care. It then shows how these developments were reflected in a range of medical discourses, such as bills of mortality, medical advertisements, medical recipes, and medical rhetoric, and provides an extensive body of case studies to highlight how varieties of medical discourse have been targeted at different audiences over time. It draws on a wide range of methodological frameworks and is accompanied by numerous relevant illustrations, making it essential reading for academic researchers and students across the human sciences.
