A biography-in-poems of Georgia O'Keeffe, interwoven with the
poet's lyric accounts of a solitary month in a primitive desert
cabin. A narrative-driven collection that reads like a novel, this
book delves into issues of creativity, feminism, and relationships,
while exploring turn-of-the last century New York City and the New
Mexico high desert of the 1930s and today. "Georgia O'Keeffe's
remarkable life and work inspired this poetic meditation on
everything from the pleasures and pains of love to the
transformations that time works on an individual. And just as the
artist distilled the essence of her subject matter, abstracting
from flowers and bones, landscapes and clouds, a vivid story of her
walk in the sun, so Jessica Jacobs discovers a vibrant music rooted
in portraiture. 'How little it takes/ to make home unfamiliar,' she
writes. And home in this stunning book turns out to be the entire
universe. Make yourself comfortable. There is so much to taste and
see."--Christopher Merrill, Necessities and From the Faraway

This innovative volume focuses on tourism through the twin lenses
of cultural theory and cultural geography. Presenting a set of
innovative case studies on tourist destinations around the world,
the contributors explore the paradoxes of the tourist experience
and the implications of these paradoxes for our broader
understanding of the problems of modernity and identity. The book
examines how tourism reveals the paradoxical ways that places are
both mobile and rooted, real and fake, inhabited by those who are
simultaneously insiders and outsiders, and both subjectively
experienced and objectively viewed. The concepts of travel and
mobility long have been used to explain modern identity and social
behavior, but this work pushes beyond the established literature by
considering the ways that place and mobility are inherently related
in unexpected, even contradictory ways. Travel, the international
cast of authors contends, occurs 'in place' rather than 'between
places.' Thus, instead of offering yet another interpretation of
the ways modern societies are distinguished by their mobilities-in
contrast to the supposed place-bound quality of traditional
societies-the chapters here collectively argue for an understanding
of modern identity as simultaneously grounded and mobile. This rich
blend of empirical and theoretical analysis will be invaluable for
cultural geographers, anthropologists, and sociologists of tourism.
Here's how to teach character education in a way that will
encourage your students' health and happiness at the same time as
improving their learning experience. Teaching Virtues explains the
current reality facing teachers too much inspiration and not enough
implementation and responds with specific psychological and
pedagogical strategies. Based upon the universal virtues present in
the holistic American Indian view of ethics, the methods in this
book enable educators to unify character and curriculum. A more
ethical and more educated student is the result. View the Authors

Illustrated by revealing interviews with women and men in the
tourist resorts in the Sinai, Egypt, this book is ostensibly about
western women who sleep with 'native' men while on holiday.
Broadening the scope of issues involved, it examines the link
between these holiday romances and a much wider romanticism of
place and people - of the landscapes of paradise, deserts and the
lure of the Bedouin sheikh - that are used to sell these
destinations. It argues that the romantic stereotyping and
deliberate positioning of 'Third World' resorts as places that
somehow exist outside of the modernities the women come from is
inextricably bound up in the relationships. Similarly, for the
local man the tourist resort is perceived as a place other than his
own cultural space and time and represents a modernity that is
otherwise only found in the 'West'. The relationships that ensue
can therefore only occur because the tourist resort acts as an
intermediate space. In analyzing the interaction of these men and
women within the context of modernity, the book provides insights
into gender issues to do with globalization, travel and sexuality,
as well as opening up the debate on sex tourism and showing this to
be a lot more ambiguous and complicated than it might at first
appear.
