This detailed volume explores the notable progress in the field of zinc finger proteins (ZFP) study through widely used methods and protocols involving their biological functions and applications. Beginning with a section on the basic biology of ZFPs and design and applications of custom ZFPs, the book continues by covering methods for the evaluation and prevention of ZFN-mediated cytotoxicity as well as a collection of the representative methods of ZFN delivery. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Zinc Finger Proteins: Methods and Protocols aims to prompt both the understanding of ZFP biology and the development of next-generation ZFP therapeutics.
This book elucidates the murky realities of China's taxation system today, and advocates bold plans for change. Theorizing finance and taxation in relation to a national political system, the authors explain the current tangled-up realities of China's creaky, inherited and uneven tax system- and put forward a plan for radical change. This book will be of interest to finance professionals, economists, and scholars of the Chinese economy. The focus is to properly handle the three basic economic and social relations between the government and the market (and the enterprises as the main market entities), between the central and local governments, and between the public power system and the citizens. This book follows the research context of problem orientation - goal orientation - practical operation, and puts forward the ideas, basic goals and paths of fiscal system reform that adapt to the modernization of national governance.
This thesis presents original research on how to seamlessly integrate electronics with living biological systems. Jia Liu has used silicon nanowires as active sensors to investigate biological signals at the cellular level. He has also designed nanoelectronic networks into flexible, three-dimensional (3D) and macroporous architectures, which mimic the structure of tissue scaffolds for in vitro 3D integrations with synthetic tissues and in vivo implantation by means of syringe injection. Importantly, the results demonstrate 3D interpenetrations of nanoelectronic networks with neural networks, 3D mapping of tissue activity and long-term implantation with minimal immunoresponses. Further, the book discusses potential applications for pharmacological studies, brain activity mapping and nanoelectronics enabled therapies. The findings presented here have gained wide recognition, including a top research ranking by Chemical & Engineering News and being listed among Scientific American's 10 world changing ideas in 2015.
Little Merlin the owl is so eager to make friends and tell them all about himself, that he neglects to think about what they want. After a few false starts with no success, he decides he will give up - after all, who really needs friends? Fortunately, though, Merlin then meets someone who is good at making friends. Who shows him that friendship is a fun give-and-take. Young children experiencing the ups and downs of first friendships will relate to Merlin’s plight and enjoy his funny friend-making tips - and even grown-ups will appreciate the gentle reminders to “share your worms” and “listen as much as you squawk!”

This playful picture book demonstrates key math concepts to children in a merry story featuring the Arithmechicks, ten math-loving chicks. The Arithmechicks have invited their new friend Mouse for a sleepover. When Mama says it's time for bed, the clever chicks decide it's time to prolong the fun instead! During the story, readers are invited to count and take away during everyone's favorite game of hide-and-seek -- and to find Mouse, who hides in a different place in each illustration -- until all settle down for bed in the warm, cozy conclusion. The book is the perfect introduction to essential math for young children and their caregivers. It includes a helpful glossary that defines the eight arithmetic strategies the chicks use throughout the story.
Jia Liu tackles the unruly world of metadata development and implementation through a state-of-the-art overview of major theoretical issues and exemplary practices. Part one of her book elaborates on the general and latest knowledge about metadata and its implementations. Part two discusses an international array of metadata-related practices, projects and applications in the digital library. While the concept of metadata predates the Internet, worldwide interest in its standards and practices is directly linked to the increase in electronic publishing and digital libraries. Yet questions remain, such as: What form should these standards take? Who gets to develop them? How will they do so and how, in turn, will they be implemented?
