Where young people grow up makes a decisive difference to their
life chances. Drawing on case studies from ten European cities,
this book looks at how the local environment and the services
available for young people affect their socialization. What comes
to the fore are the local matters. On the one hand, there are
experiences of discrimination and marginalization due to distance
and isolation, decay and neglect but also related to piecemeal and
top-down approaches to youth and social services. On the other, we
find signs of positive transformation and drivers of social
innovation: community building projects, the revitalization of
abandoned places, appreciative approaches to servicing and a whole
array of tactics that young people deploy to overcome their daily
struggles.
For years Jasper, a moon bear, lived a miserable existence, held
captive in a cage by bear farmers in rural China. The farmers
extracted the bile from Jasper's body and sold it to be used in
traditional medicines. It's a horrific practice and conducted on
thousands of moon bears each year. But now Jasper has the chance to
be free and live a life away from pain and torture. In 2000,
Animals Asia, an animal welfare organization, rescued Jasper and
other captive moon bears, taking them to its Moon Bear Rescue
Centre. Here veterinarians attended to the bears' wounds, hoping to
give them some chance of a peaceful existence in the animal
sanctuary. But after so many years of abuse Jasper's wounds, both
physical and mental, are extensive. Can Jasper mend his body and
mind and finally enjoy the life he was meant to live?
Jill Robinson, the author of Bed/Time/Story and Past Forgetting, and her husband, Stuart Shaw, share their true story about finding love when they both had lost faith in romance. When Stuart and Jill first met, neither felt ready for love. Stuart was recovering from the alcoholism that had wrecked his marriage and ravaged his career. Jill was recovering from a second failed marriage and believed she was done with love forever. But then, in a crowded Connecticut diner, Jill caught Stuart's eye and shot him a look that she knew would draw him in. What follows is a sexy journey toward commitment told from both points of view: his and hers.
