This book deals with the synthesis, properties and applications of
titanium dioxide (TiO2) which is a naturally occurring oxide of the
element titanium. In nature these oxides are found in well-known
minerals such as Rutile, Anatase and Brookite. However, it is most
commonly extracted from titanium tetrachloride by carbon reduction
and re-oxidisation. Alternatively, it may be processed from another
oxide called ilmenite, which is subjected to reduction with
sulphuric acid to achieve pure titanium dioxide.
This book deals with a new class of ceramic materials, the MAX
Phases, which are unique new ternary carbides and nitrides. These
materials exhibit a unique combination of characters of both
ceramics and metals. Like ceramics, they have low density, low
thermal expansion coefficient, high modulus and high strength, and
good high-temperature oxidation resistance. Like metals, they are
good electrical and thermal conductors, readily machinable,
tolerant to damage, and resistant to thermal shock. The unique
combination of these interesting properties enables these ceramics
to be a promising candidate material for use in many diverse
fields, especially in high temperature applications
Jim Lowe is well placed to tackle this question, having spent most
of his career in the retail industry. As director of Makro UK from
1970-83 and Focus Wickes from 1994-2006 he has gained first-hand
experience of how the industry has developed through- out the years
and ultimately how these changes have affected the consumer. Retail
Giants - Friend or Foe? looks at all aspects of this issue, high-
lighting the benefits and risks to consumers, suppliers and smaller
retailers as the power of the 'Big Four' retailers continues to
grow.
