This author discovered Libertarianism somewhat by accident in late 1994 or early 1995 through an article in a popular outdoor magazine. The article outlined and explained the "official" party platform of the Libertarian Party. That was the first time this article had ever heard of any such party. I thought to myself, 'Damn, I was born a libertarian and didn't even know it.' Over the years, I had sat in a multitude of economics and political science classes. Never once had I heard the names Ludvig von Mises, Murray Rothbard or any of the others for that matter. But this thing called "libertarianism" just made common sense. I was eager to learn but I was on my own. I begin to read and outline books for my own learning benefit. This quickly led to the discovery of THE ETHICS OF LIBERTY by Murray N. Rothbard, the father of what some call Radical Libertarianism or Anarcho-Capitalism. Hans-Hermann Hoppe described it as "Rothbard's unique contribution to the rediscovery of property and property rights as the common foundation of both economics and political philosophy, and the systematic reconstruction and conceptual integration of modern, marginalist economics and natural-law political philosophy into a unified moral science: libertarianism." After having spent a lifetime searching for an objective, consistent way to make ethical choices, I had finally found it. At this point, I was a hooked Anarcho-Capitalist. I continued to read, outline and learn. That eventually led to the launch of a web site called FlyoverPress.com. Then it dawned on me that, if I converted my outlines into prose, they would make very good condensed (Cliff Note type) book reviews for my web page. This was the birth of what I called "The Essence of Liberty Series." It was not until years later that I came to realize that the individual parts of this series could be combined and organized into a book that might be useful, especially for those who are new to the idea of liberty. So that is how we got here. This collection of condensed versions of some very good books is not intended to be the comprehensive, end all, burning bush of liberty. It is simply a synopsis of the books that had the most influence on me during my journey out of the darkness of neo-conservatism. My general purpose with The Essence of Liberty is to provide an introduction and sound basic foundation in the fundamentals of a discipline that integrates sound, free market principles of economics with a property rights-natural law based ethic into a single whole-a truly universal philosophy of political economy applicable to all men at all times and in all places. I attempt to accomplish this by offering a set of condensed versions of some of the classical as well as modern works in the "science" of liberty. I hope to "capture the essence of liberty" in as few words as possible and in a language understandable by the reasonably intelligent person without formal education in political science or economics. By necessity, any condensation or compression of complex arguments into a fraction of their original length will involve some oversimplification. I hope to do this without distortion. I refer the reader to the appropriate chapter and section of the original work for the facts, figures and other details. In this manner, I hope to whet the appetite for the original and more. My ultimate objective is to make these logically based, common sense ideas available to a wider audience and, thereby, make a small contribution to the struggle for liberty. If I succeeded, that will have been my only small claim to originality because the ideas are from the minds and the pens of the authors. The errors are mine. The Essence of Liberty is organized into a series of three volumes: Volume I: Liberty and History: The Rise and Fall of the Noble Experiment with Constitutionally Limited Government. Volume II: The Economics of Liberty Volume III: Liberty: A Universal Political Ethi

"Owning a handgun doesn't make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician." - Jeff Cooper Call for a pizza, a cop, and an ambulance and see which one arrives first. In Warren v. District of Columbia the court ruled, and the Supreme Court upheld, that "(T)he desire for condemnation cannot satisfy the need for a special relationship out of which a duty to specify persons arises." Because the complaint did not allege a relationship "beyond that found in general police responses to crimes," the court affirmed the dismissal of the complaint for failure to state a claim. The bottom line is that your local police are not legally obligated to protect you, the average citizen. In addition to the Warren case, there are hundreds of court rulings which state that cops are not legally responsible for protecting individual citizens. For example, see Zelig v. County of Los Angeles, The government can't protect you as you saw on September 11, 2001 as well as during the Washington, DC area "sniper" rampage. In fact, the government could very well be our greatest fear, due to its propensity to murder people because of their ideas (See Ruby Ridge, ID and Waco, TX). A simple internet or youtube.com search of "the police state" or "police brutality" will reveal literally thousands of violent crimes (from assault to cold blooded murder) committed by the State's costumed emissaries of officially sanctioned violence (aka The Police State) against harmless and innocent people. So, who does that leave to protect you, your life, property and family? The one and only answer is: YOU It is your duty and personal responsibility to protect yourself and your loved ones. This responsibility is a natural right given to us by God as human beings and guaranteed to us as individuals by the Constitution of the United States of America. This Handbook is intended to help you exercise that right and meet that responsibility. It begins with safety, always the primary consideration in any training scenario. No war was ever won by shooting the good guys. It then takes up where all firearms training should begin-with basic, open sighted rifle marksmanship on a known distance range. This chapter follows the US Marine Corps' Marksmanship Manuals very closely. It fully reveals the training techniques that have made US Marines the most accomplished marksmen of all the military organizations on the face of the earth. After mastering these "fundamentals," the reader/trainee is ready to be introduced to the basic principles of Combat Shooting including threat assessment, the hierarchy of survival principles (combat mindset) and principles of training. Then separate chapters cover the fine points of combat rifle (carbine), combat shotgun and combat pistol technique. It then wraps up with a final chapter covering advanced combat applications, training techniques and drills. Remember, train like you fight-fight like you train. Train hard. Be safe. Stay low. Watch your six and come home alive and God bless. Options for Homeland Defense, Inc. (Protecting Liberty through Private Firearms Ownership) offers professional weapons and tactics training that will make the difference. Instructed by experienced combat veterans-guys that have "been there and done that." It offers private instruction at its privately owned range and mobile training teams are available. All interactions are confidential and discrete. Contact: You can contact us via email at [email protected] or through any of the contact or email links on our Web Site at www.flyover-press.com
Sometimes people do the wrong things for the right reasons. The author admits that to be the "story of his life" and openly shares much of it in this book. Although the book is largely an historically based auto-biography, it is part fact and part fiction. In cases where identities needed to be protected, the "facts" necessary to that end are changed but without altering the accuracy of the description of the event or its historical significance. It is a personal story. It is a cowboy-warrior's story told in a cowboy-warrior's language. It is the story of one man's journey from bondage to freedom and from slavery to liberty. It is the gritty story of this man's life-long education in the school of hard knocks as his journey took him from a sharecropper's shack, through the rodeo arena and the boxing ring, across the football field and the drilling rig floor, into the Marines and two wars and ultimately culminating in the university laboratory and classroom (the most dangerous of all the aforementioned places). Although woven around the experiences and adventures of one man, it is also the story of the people who lived during the period of time in American history that an entire generation was betrayed It is the story of the dramatically changing times in which this personal odyssey took place. It is the story of the betrayal of an entire generation of Americans and particularly the 40% (of the military aged males) of that generation that fought the Vietnam war. The story is told mostly in the form vignettes-short scenes of a particular moment or event. Some are significant. Many are trivial. Some are humorous. Others are heart breaking--even nightmarish. But when sequenced, they tell a story that has a theme. They chronicle an odyssey-an intellectual journey that begins with the author's self-contradictory and delusional rationalizations for some of the horrible things that he did in the name of "mother, God and country" and ends with the realization that they were, indeed, horrible. The conclusions are not mere "visions in the night." They are a result of a very difficult process of shaking a lifetime of authoritarian indoctrination. Some segments of the book will likely be interpreted as "whining" or "self-pity" and they probably are. But it is also a story of love, hate, happiness, sadness, anger, complacency, adventure, excitement, boredom, bravery, fear, duty, tyranny, incompetence, empire building, honor, cowardice, heroism and yes, betrayal. The book is the product of a lifetime of experience and reflection with a little research and a healthy portion of labored discipline added. It was written with the white heat of passion that occurs during the moment when the world comes into focus for the first time. It will bring your world into better focus.
From the Editor: I first attended Alan Savory and Stan Parson's "Rancher School" in Albuquerque, NM in the early 1980s. Since that time, and throughout my academic career, I have advocated, taught and practiced the principles of the "Savory Grazing Method (or SGM)" as it was called in those days. Only a short time after I completed the school, Alan and Stan decided to dissolve their partnership and go their separate ways. Alan founded Holistic Management International and Stan the Ranching for Profit School. SGM (now Holistic Management) is a "method" and "methods" cannot be patented. As a result, the names the principles are presented under have proliferated. Although the fundamental ecological principles have not changed since those early days, we now have managed grazing, planned grazing, mob grazing, management intensive grazing, and perhaps a half-dozen others. (In fact, for some small degree of distinction, we choose to call what we do "Managing the Ranch as a Business with Restoration Grazing.") Never-the-less, to this day I still find myself referring to it as "The Savory Grazing Method" in honor of the brilliant man from whose mind these ideas sprung. This guide is a detailed book review of sorts, but perhaps it would be more accurately described as an abstract that condenses 864 pages of detail into 189 pages of concentrated information. First, "Holistic Management: A New Framework for Decision Making" by Alan Savory with Jody Butterfield and "Holistic Management Handbook: Healthy Land, Healthy Profits by Jody Butterfield, Sam Bingam and Allan Savory" were condensed and summarized. Then, the summaries were complied into one with the result being organized into a logical sequence. In no way is it intended to be a substitute for the original works. They are both highly recommended and readily available from Land & Livestock International, Inc., Holistic Management International, Amazon.com and many other sources. Suggested uses might include: lesson plan guidelines for educators a study guide for students and a field guide and quick reference manual for practitioners The material is organized into nine "Lessons: " Lesson 1: Introduction Lesson 2: The Strategic Goal Lesson 3: The Four Fundamental Ecosystem Processes Lesson 4: Tools for Ecosystem Management Lesson 5: Management Guidelines Lesson 6: Infrastructure Planning Lesson 7: Grazing Planning Lesson 8: Financial Planning Lesson 9: Monitoring and Control In sum: the primary objective was to capture the essence of the two works in as few words as possible and in a language understandable by the reasonably intelligent person without formal education in natural resource or business management. My hope is to make these logical, common sense ideas available to a wider audience and, thereby, make a small contribution to the conservation of the world's natural resources. If I have succeeded, that would be my only small claim to originality because the ideas are from the minds and the pens of Allan Savory, Jody Butterfield and Sam Bingham. The errors are mine.
