'This is a captivating book ... Min Jin Lee's novel takes us through
four generations and each character's search for identity and success.
It's a powerful story about resilience and compassion' BARACK OBAMA.
Yeongdo, Korea 1911. In a small fishing village on the banks of the
East Sea, a club-footed, cleft-lipped man marries a fifteen-year-old
girl. The couple have one child, their beloved daughter Sunja. When
Sunja falls pregnant by a married yakuza, the family face ruin. But
then Isak, a Christian minister, offers her a chance of salvation: a
new life in Japan as his wife.
Following a man she barely knows to a hostile country in which she has
no friends, no home, and whose language she cannot speak, Sunja's
salvation is just the beginning of her story.
Through eight decades and four generations, Pachinko is an epic tale of
family, identity, love, death and survival.

Korean director Hae-sung Song's remake of John Woo's 1986 action
blockbuster. Leaving his younger brother Cheol (Kim Kang-woo)
behind, Kim Hyeok (Jin-mo Ju) flees North Korea with his best
friend Lee Yeong-choon (Seung-heon Song), and sets himself up as an
illegal arms smuggler in South Korea. After being double-crossed in
an arms deal, Hyeok is caught and spends three years in jail. On
his release, and still guilt-ridden over leaving his brother
behind, he sets out to seek a reconciliation with Cheol, now a
police officer, only to have his advances rebuffed. Now, as Hyeok
tries to go straight, he finds himself on a collision course with
Cheol as the two opposing brothers get caught up in a gang war that
threatens to engulf them both.
Climate change has altered hydrologic conditions, which directly
affects water resources. In addition, increasing human activities
have an impact on water resources, water environment and water
ecology. Rivers are important channels of water cycle, the main
source of fresh water for human consumption and an important
renewed resource, which play essential roles in material cycle,
energy flow and climate regulation. Reservoirs are important
components of water conservancy constructions, and play vital roles
in regional flood interception, water storage, and the regulation
of water flow. It is of great significance to study the mechanism
of the water cycle under the changing environment and build an
optimized water resource management based on it. Rivers and
reservoirs are faced with many problems, and it is necessary to
study the optimal management of water resources in rivers, lakes
and reservoirs, the hydrological mechanism and ecological
environment process (including experimental and numerical
simulation methods), the optimal operation of engineering
facilities and their natural and social effects, as well as the
mitigation of water security problems and ensuring the
sustainability of the ecosystem through the integrated management
of rivers and reservoirs. In Focus – a book series that showcases
the latest accomplishments in water research. Each book focuses on
a specialist area with papers from top experts in the field. It
aims to be a vehicle for in-depth understanding and inspire further
conversations in the sector.
Focusing on knowledge-intensive and innovative entrepreneurial
firms and multinationals, this book explains how Chinese firms are
increasingly developing innovative capabilities and engaging in
globalization. As Chinese firms become world-leaders in their
markets and household names internationally, this timely book
examines innovation ecosystems and their affect on Chinese firms to
act on innovative opportunities. Cutting-edge chapters advance
debates in entrepreneurship, innovation management, economic
geography and international business, analysing the co-evolution
between the innovation ecosystem and innovation capabilities of
Chinese firms. Drawing attention to the interdependencies of
globalization, mergers and acquisitions and innovation, leading
scholars in Chinese economics and entrepreneurship unpack the role
of market capabilities in the development process of innovation and
globalization to mark the trajectories of global Chinese firms.
Addressing key themes in Chinese entrepreneurship, this book is
crucial reading for scholars and researchers of business and
economics, particularly those focusing on innovative capabilities.
Its practical insights and empirical findings will also be
beneficial to practitioners and policymakers.
Nowhere in the world presents a more dramatic case of wealth
creation than East Asia. Contrary to the common belief that social
policy in the economic powerhouses of the region is secondary to
their pursuit of economic growth, Gyu-Jin Hwang argues that it has
in fact played an integral part in building strong states and
competitive market economies. Building Markets examines the
original four Newly Industrialised Economies (NIEs) of East Asia:
Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan, as well as Japan, the
regional forerunner in both economic and social terms. Chapters
undertake a comparative analysis of the various social policy
measures and redistributive efforts taken across a diverse range of
social policy sectors in the region, covering cash transfers,
healthcare, education, housing, and family policy. Addressing the
mounting pressure on East Asian economies to rethink their growth
strategies, Hwang concludes with a call for social means to be
diverted, adapted, and converted to serve new social ends.
Integrating cutting-edge theoretical insights with detailed policy
analysis, Building Markets will be an invaluable tool for academics
and postgraduate students interested in social policy, economics,
and development in East Asia.

The present study makes a syntactic-hierarchical analysis of the
structure of the book of Numbers and its division into textual
units. The author gives priority to syntax and second priority to
participants and their roles.
In a period of rapid change for welfare states around the world,
this insightful book offers a comparative study of three
historically small welfare states: the US, Japan and South Korea.
Examining various aspects of welfare states, chapters explore the
underlying reasons behind the restraint of social security in these
countries. Featuring contributions from international distinguished
scholars, this book looks beyond the larger European welfare states
to unpack the many common political and institutional
characteristics - from labor organization to party politics - that
have constrained welfare state development in industrialized
democracies. Offering insight into welfare-state development
outside of Europe, this book will be crucial reading for scholars
of welfare states, especially those working on Asian and American
social policy specifically. It will also be of interest to
policymakers and social policy experts in government, civil
institutions and international organizations, particularly for
those working in developing countries. Contributors include: M.
Estevez-Abe, C. Faricy, S. Haggard, Y.-R, Jung, D. Kim, S.-w. Kim,
Y.-S. Kim, J. Klein, S.-M. Kwon, D. Oude Nijuis, J.-j. Yang
This insightful book examines the impact of two competing visions
of Asian-Pacific economic growth paths and development governance.
It discusses law, development and finance in the context of the
Indo-Pacific Strategy versus the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI),
whilst also comparing parallel development financing systems. Jin
Sheng reflects on and connects a series of issues of global
significance, such as the economic Cold War, global debt,
industrialisation and development in the developing world, and the
changing international economic order. In so doing the author
posits that the BRI's ultimate objective is to export China's
development model, which is characterised by a focus on exports,
experimentalism, and oversupply of currency. The book also
critically examines China's ambition to dominate the international
economic order and set up its own favoured international rules.
Alternative Development Finance and Parallel Development Strategies
in the Asia-Pacific will be an important read for researchers and
policy makers in the fields of law, development and finance in the
Asia-Pacific region.
