This third volume concludes our introduction to analysis, wherein we ?nish laying the groundwork needed for further study of the subject. As with the ?rst two, this volume contains more material than can treated in a single course. It is therefore important in preparing lectures to choose a suitable subset of its content; the remainder can be treated in seminars or left to independent study. The second volume of this introduction into analysis deals with the integration theory of functions of one variable, the multidimensional differential calculus and the theory of curves and line integrals. The modern and clear development that started in Volume I is continued. In this way a sustainable basis is created which allows the reader to deal with interesting applications that sometimes go beyond material represented in traditional textbooks. This applies, for instance, to the exploration of Nemytskii operators which enable a transparent introduction into the calculus of variations and the derivation of the Euler-Lagrange equations.

The volume originates from the 'Conference on Nonlinear Parabolic Problems' held in celebration of Herbert Amann's 70th birthday at the Banach Center in Bedlewo, Poland. It features a collection of peer-reviewed research papers by recognized experts highlighting recent advances in fields of Herbert Amann's interest such as nonlinear evolution equations, fluid dynamics, quasi-linear parabolic equations and systems, functional analysis, and more.

Celebrating the work of a renowned mathematician, it is our pleasure to present this volume containing the proceedings of the conference "Nonlinear Elliptic and Parabolic Problems: A Special Tribute to the Work of Herbert Amann", held in Zurich, June 28-30, 2004. This volume brings together four lecture courses on modern aspects of water waves. The intention, through the lectures, is to present quite a range of mathematical ideas, primarily to show what is possible and what, currently, is of particular interest. Water waves of large amplitude can only be fully understood in terms of nonlinear effects, linear theory being not adequate for their description. Taking advantage of insights from physical observation, experimental evidence and numerical simulations, classical and modern mathematical approaches can be used to gain insight into their dynamics. The book presents several avenues and offers a wide range of material of current interest. The lectures provide a useful source for those who want to begin to investigate how mathematics can be used to improve our understanding of water wave phenomena. In addition, some of the material can be used by those who are already familiar with one branch of the study of water waves, to learn more about other areas.
