Der Band thematisiert die europäische und außereuropäische Auseinandersetzung mit der griechisch-römischen Antike im 18. Jahrhundert. In rund 140 Artikeln von „Adel“ bis „Zensur“ stellen ca. 100 Experten dar, wie die „klassische“ Antike, aber auch konkurrierende Altertümer im Zeitalter der Aufklärung, der Revolutionen und des wissenschaftlichen Fortschritts wahrgenommen und erforscht wurden und zur Selbstvergewisserung und Formulierung neuer Ideale dienten. Alle gesellschaftlichen Bereiche von der Literatur und den Künsten über Alltagskultur, Bildung, Philosophie, Religion, Recht oder Wirtschaft werden berührt. Der Zeitraum der Darstellung reicht von der „Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes“ in Frankreich 1687 bis zur Neuordnung Europas durch den Wiener Kongress 1815. Ausführliche Register ermöglichen einen differenzierten Zugriff auf die breite Themenvielfalt dieses Rezeptionsbandes.

What makes a literary work of art beautiful? What distinguishes this kind of beauty from others? In Europe, this problem has been repeatedly addressed in poetology and art theory. The present study is the first to trace the ramifications of the problem in a broader context, extending from antiquity to the 20th century. The conclusion is that in its engagement with beauty, literary esthetics takes an approach of its own to the identification of and reflection upon the nature of literature as a medium and the specific materiality and expository potential of literature, homing in not least on those things that defy communication by means of the written word.

Die Arbeit ist die erste umfassende und theoretisch fundierte Systemanalyse der Getrennt-/Zusammenschreibung (GZS) im Deutschen. Im Rahmen der Optimalitatstheorie wird das Zusammenwirken der Gesetze expliziert, die abhangig von bestimmten grammatischen Faktoren Spatien in der Graphemfolge fordern bzw. verbieten. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt einem zentralen Gesetz, das fur Teilglieder morphologisch gebildeter Komplexe Zusammenschreibung verlangt. Wie der Begriff "morphologisch" hierbei zu deuten ist, wird ausfuhrlich diskutiert. Die Untersuchung wird separat fur die GZS vor und nach der Rechtschreibreform durchgefuhrt (Alt- bzw. Neu-GZS). Als Tertium Comparationis wird anhand der vielen unveranderten Schreibungen ein Kern-System der deutschen GZS ermittelt. Beim Vergleich der Varianten ergibt sich, dass das System der Neu-GZS komplexer ist als das der Alt-GZS und zudem gegen zentrale Grundsatze des Kern-Systems verstoesst.

The upheavals in European philosophy, religion and literature caused by the advent of the Age of Enlightenment did not leave the ancient and venerable tradition of Christian literature unaffected. One offshoot of the encounter was the idea of a form of 'sacred poetry' (F.G. Klopstock) in which Christian Revelation was to be represented in an entirely new way through the agency of the new 'enlightened' poetic diction. The study reconstructs the theory and the literary materializations of this idea in their historical context, with special reference to philosophical aesthetics, German pietism and rationalist poetics.
