A New York Times best art book of 2022 New insights into the
innovative multimedia work and early career of fourteenth-century
Italian painter Simone Martini Painter to popes, princes, and
scions of Renaissance dynasties, Simone Martini (ca. 1284-1344)
transformed Western painting with his groundbreaking devotional
images and masterful manipulation of gold. This beautifully
illustrated book highlights the astonishing novelty of his
paintings in terms of their construction, multimedia techniques,
and imagery. A focus of the book-the first on Simone Martini in
English in over thirty years-is the work that he produced for
churches in the Umbrian city of Orvieto, a papal refuge and

volume of essays by postgraduate students at the Courtauld
Institute, University of London, explores some of the ways in which
art was used to express, to celebrate, and to promote the political
and religious aims and aspirations of those in power in the city
states of central Italy in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
The contributions focus on four centres: Siena, Arezzo, Pisa and
Orvieto, and range over a number of media: fresco, panel painting,
sculpture, metalwork, and translucent enamel. Employing a variety
of methods and approaches, these stimulating essays offer a fresh
look at some of the key artistic projects of the period. The dates
cited in the title, 1261 and 1352, refer to two well-known works,
Coppo di Marcovaldo's Madonna del Bordone and the Guidoriccio
Fresco in the Palazzo Pubblico of Siena, here newly assigned to
this date. By concentrating on individual cases such as these, the
essays provide rewardingly sustained consideration, at the same
time raising crucial issues concerning the role of art in the
public life of the period. These generously-illustrated studies

This book is comprised of 2018 and 2019 CRS reports on general
national security of the United States. The first reports provides
a background and status on Overseas Contingency Operations Funding.
Since the terrorist attacks of September 11th, Congress has
appropriated approximately $2 trillion in discretionary budget
authority designated as emergency requirements or for Overseas
Contingency Operations/Global War on Terrorism in support of the
broad US government response to the 9/11 attacks and other related
international affairs activities. The second report examines the
military construction funding in the event of a national emergency.
Next, there is a discussion on whether the Department of Defense
can build the border wall. The last three reports are focused on
background and issues for Congress on the Purple Heart, one of the
oldest and most recognized American military medals, a guide for
Members of Congress on key aspects of the Department of Defense and
how Congress exercises authority over it, and finally, a report
that lists hundreds of instances in which the US has used its Armed
Forces abroad in situations of military conflict or potential
conflict or for other than normal peacetime purposes from the years
of 1798 to 2018.
Case Studies in Deaf Education provides comprehensive materials
that will prepare prospective teachers to work with the diverse
spectrum of students who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) and
empower them to better understand these complex and unique
learners. The text presents an extensive series of case studies
that are balanced and unbiased in both language and instructional
approaches and that encourage readers to use background details,
academic data, and evidence-based practices to make informed
educational decisions. The authors address the diversity of d/Dhh
students by examining a multitude of learner characteristics that
influence communication and educational services. These
characteristics and their interactions include a student's
background experiences, language and communication mode (sign
and/or listening and spoken language), language and academic
proficiency levels, use of assistive hearing devices (hearing aids
