Computational methodologies of signal processing and imaging analysis, namely considering 2D and 3D images, are commonly used in different applications of the human society. For example, Computational Vision systems are progressively used for surveillance tasks, traf?c analysis, recognition process, inspection p- poses, human-machine interfaces, 3D vision and deformation analysis. One of the main characteristics of the Computational Vision domain is its int- multidisciplinary. In fact, in this domain, methodologies of several more fundam- tal sciences, such as Informatics, Mathematics, Statistics, Psychology, Mechanics and Physics are usually used. Besides this inter-multidisciplinary characteristic, one of the main reasons that contributes for the continually effort done in this domain of the human knowledge is the number of applications in the medical area. For instance, it is possible to consider the use of statistical or physical procedures on medical images in order to model the represented structures. This modeling can have different goals, for example: shape reconstruction, segmentation, registration, behavior interpretation and simulation, motion and deformation analysis, virtual reality, computer-assisted therapy or tissue characterization. The main objective of the ECCOMAS Thematic Conferences on Computational Vision and Medical Image Processing (VIPimage) is to promote a comprehensive forum for discussion on the recent advances in the related ?elds trying to id- tify widespread areas of potential collaboration between researchers of different sciences.

This book presents novel and advanced technologies for medical sciences in order to solidify knowledge in the related fields and define their key stakeholders. It is indeed a great pleasure to welcome you to the proceedings of the Inter- tional Symposium "Computational Modeling of Objects Represented in Images. Fundamentals,MethodsandApplications"(CompIMAGE2010)heldinBu?alo, NY, May 5-7, 2010. This was the second issue of CompIMAGE symposia, the ?rst one being held in Coimbra, Portugal. The purpose of CompIMAGE 2010 was to provide a common forum for - searchers, scientists, engineers, and practitioners around the world to present their latest research ?ndings, ideas, developments, and applications in the area of computational modeling of objects represented in images. In particular, the symposium aimed to attract scientists who use various approaches - such as ?nite element method, optimization methods, modal analysis, stochastic me- ods, principal components analysis, independent components analysis, distri- tion models, geometrical modeling, digital geometry, grammars,fuzzy logic, and others - to solve problems that appear in a wide range of areas as diverse as medicine, robotics, defense, security, astronomy,materialscience, and manuf- turing. CompIMAGE 2010 was highly international. Its Program Committee m- bersarerenownedexpertscomingfrom25di?erentcountries.Submissionstothe symposium came from 22 countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America. Overall, representatives of 32 countries contributed to the symposium in di?erent capacities.

This book includes extended versions of the selected papers from VISIGRAPP 2009, the International Joint Conference on Computer Vision, Imaging and Computer Graphics Theory and Applications, which was held in Lisbon, Portugal, during February 5-8, 2009 and organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). VISIGRAPP comprises three component conferences, namely, the International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications (VISAPP), the International Conference on Computer Graphics Theory and Applications (GRAPP), and the International Conference on Imaging Theory and Applications (IMAGAPP). VISIGRAPP received a total of 422 paper submissions from more than 50 co- tries. From these, and after a rigorous double-blind evaluation method, 72 papers were published as full papers. These figures show that this conference is now an - tablished venue for researchers in the broad fields of computer vision, computer graphics and image analysis. From the full papers, 25 were selected for inclusion in this book. The selection process was based on the scores assigned by the Program Committee reviewers as well as the Session Chairs. After selection, the papers were further revised and extended by the authors. Our gratitude goes to all contributors and referees, without whom this book would not have been possible.
