Social movements are not only a potential challenge to societies, they also challenge social theory. This volume looks at social movements and social movement research through the lens of different social theories. What can social movement studies learn from these theories? And: What can these theories learn from the analysis of social movements? From this double vantage point, the book discusses the theories of Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu, Niklas Luhmann, Jeffrey Alexander, and Judith Butler, as well as rational choice theory, relational sociology, and organizational neo-institutionalism.

In dieser Untersuchung sollen zwei zentrale Themen behandelt werden: 1. Was sind die Bedingung fur die soziale Integration einer Gesellschaft? 2. Was sind die Bedingungen fur die gesellschaftliche Integration der Europaischen Union? Bei naherer Betrachtung handelt es sich um nur eine Frage, die sich allgemein oder konkret mit Bezug auf die Europaische Union (EU) stellen lasst. Zwei getrennte Fragen sind es aber in der Disziplin, denn beide wurden bisher weitgehend getrennt voneinander und ohne systematische Aufnahme der jeweils anderen Perspektive diskutiert. In der soziologischen Theorie haben UEberlegungen zu den Voraussetzungen der sozialen Integration von Gesellschaften eine lange Tradition. Dabei waren die Fra gen zentral, ob Gesellschaften ein gemeinsames Wertefundament brauchen und wie dieses Fundament aussehen muss. Parsons mit seiner These eines Wertekon sens als Bedingung fur Gesellschaft und als Gegenspieler die Konflikttheorie sind zu Eckpunkten einer ausdifferenzierten Debatte geworden (vgl. u.a. Friedrichs/ Jagodzinski 1999, Munch 1997). Die Diskussion wurde vor allem theoretisch gefuhrt. Der Grund dafur liegt auf der Hand. Gesellschaften sind uns immer schon als integrierte Gesellschaften gegeben. Es ist sogar nicht eindeutig klar, was eine nicht integrierte Gesellschaft empirisch bedeutet und ob es sie geben kann.

Die Kompetenzen in der Umweltpolitik wurden in den letzten Jahren zunehmend auf die EU-Ebene verlagert. Das Buch untersucht vergleichend, in welchem Ausmass nationale Umweltorganisationen in Deutschland und Grossbritannien sich auf diese Veranderung einstellen. In Anschluss an die Strukturierungstheorie von Giddens wird der in der Bewegungsforschung verbreitete Political Opportunity Structure-Ansatz zu einem Ansatz der Strukturierung politischer Gelegenheiten modifiziert und auf den Gegenstand angewendet. So kann der Ansatz die Aktivitaten der Umweltorganisationen jeweils aus ihrer Situation erklaren und gleichzeitig verstandlich machen, wie bzw. unter welchen Bedingungen diese jeweilige Situation aufrechterhalten wird. Dabei zeigt sich, dass zwar in fast allen Umweltorganisationen die EU als sehr wichtiger Akteur wahrgenommen wird, aber nur ein kleiner Teil in der Lage ist, auf europaischer Ebene in nennenswertem Ausmass politisch aktiv zu werden. Vor allem Organisationen, die traditionell auf Lobbying setzen und auf europaischer Ebene in einem thematisch spezifischen Netzwerk intensiv eingebunden sind, konnen mit den Schwierigkeiten der politischen Arbeit bei der EU umgehen. Dagegen tun sich vor allem solche Umweltorganisationen schwer, die auf Offentlichkeitsarbeit, Protest und aktive Einbindung der Basis setzen.
