Service provisioning in ad hoc networks is challenging given the difficulties of communicating over a wireless channel and the potential heterogeneity and mobility of the devices that form the network. Service placement is the process of selecting an optimal set of nodes to host the implementation of a service in light of a given service demand and network topology. The key advantage of active service placement in ad hoc networks is that it allows for the service configuration to be adapted continuously at run time. "Service Placement in Ad Hoc Networks" proposes the SPi service placement framework as a novel approach to service placement in ad hoc networks. The SPi framework takes advantage of the interdependencies between service placement, service discovery and the routing of service requests to minimize signaling overhead. The work also proposes the Graph Cost / Single Instance and the Graph Cost / Multiple Instances placement algorithms.

Location-based services (LBS) are a new concept integrating a user s geographic location with the general notion of services, such as dialing an emergency number from a cell phone or using a navigation system in a car. Incorporating both mobile communication and spatial data, these applications represent a novel challenge both conceptually and technically.
The purpose of this book is to describe, in an accessible fashion, the various concepts underlying mobile location-based services. These range from general application-related ideas to technical aspects. Each chapter starts with a high level of abstraction and drills down to the technical details. Contributors examine each application from all necessary perspectives, namely, requirements, services, data, and scalability. An illustrative example begins early in the book and runs throughout, serving as a reference.

Das Buch ist eine Einfuhrung in das interdisziplinare Thema der Sicherheitsforschung und eine Aufforderung zu einem kritischen Dialog uber eine neue Sicherheitskultur in unserer Gesellschaft. Expertinnen und Experten stellen in diesem Sammelband das Themenspektrum der OEffentlichen Sicherheit vom technisch Moeglichen bis hin zum gesellschaftlich Akzeptierten dar und diskutieren aus naturwissenschaftlich-technischer als auch geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Die Publikation ist hervorgegangen aus einer Ringvorlesung mit dem Titel Wie sicher wollen wir leben? Sicherheitsforschung im Dialog, die im Wintersemester 2013/14 im Rahmen des Offenen Hoersaals an der Freien Universitat Berlin durchgefuhrt wurde. Ziel der Vorlesung war es, den durch das Forschungsforum OEffentliche Sicherheit initiierten und fachlich ausdifferenzierten Diskurs um Sicherheit in die interessierte OEffentlichkeit zu tragen und einen Beitrag zum Wissenstransfer zu leisten.
