This book explores the politics of memory in Southeastern Europe in
the context of rising populisms and their hegemonic grip on
official memory and politics. It speaks to the increased political,
media and academic attention paid to the rise of discontent,
frustration and cultural resistance from below across the European
continent and the world. In order to demonstrate the complexities
of these processes, the volume transcends disciplinary boundaries
to explore memory politics, examining the interconnections between
memory and populism. It shows how memory politics has become one of
the most important fields of symbolic struggle in the contemporary
process of "meaning-making," providing space for actors, movements
and other mnemonic entrepreneurs who challenge and point to
incoherencies in the official narratives of memory and forgetting.
Charting the contemporary rise of populist movements, the volume
will be of particular interest to regional specialists in
Southeastern Europe, Balkan and postcommunist studies, as well as
researchers, activists, policy-makers and politicians at the
national and EU levels and academics in the fields of political
science, sociology, history, cultural heritage and management,
conflict and peace studies.

The global financial crisis which erupted in 2008 had an astounding
yet varied impact on the European Union (EU), with some countries
benefiting from the crisis while others suffered. Today many more
and varied voices articulate increasing frustration,
dissatisfaction, distrust and cynicism with the current state of
affairs in Europe. This book addresses the challenges and failures
of the European construction today from an interdisciplinary
perspective. It seeks to identify the deeper, structural causes of
the failure of the European project by investigating a variety of
aspects, placing Europe in a historical perspective and
interpreting its trajectory in a global context. In doing so it
argues that the EU, the unfinished European polity, the single
European market, and the set of supranational institutions, are not
sustainable in their present forms. This text will be of key
interest to students and practitioners of international relations,
economics, European studies, democracy and contemporary European
and global challenges.

When Kong-sang was a young boy in Hong Kong, he enjoyed practicing
martial arts with his dad but hated going to school. He was
eventually enrolled in the China Drama Academy, where he improved
his martial arts skills and became a stuntman. That training led to
a successful career as an actor. Kong-sang, now known as Jackie
Chan, never gave up on his passion for screwball physical comedy.
Luckily for Jackie, his determination paid off. His humour and
dangerous stuntwork in films like Cannonball Run, Rush Hour,
Shanghai Noon, and Karate Kid have made him an international star,
and it doesn't look like he'll be leaving the big screen anytime
soon.
