In the Georgia swamplands and plantations, a cast of
anthropomorphic animals enacts daily rituals of pursuit, trickery
and escape. In this pre-Loony Toons world of sassy, talking beasts,
Brer Rabbit is the hero -- duelling both verbally and physically
with those who would eat him, and perpetually in the monstrous
shadow of the Tar Baby.
The casual publication in 1877 of "The Tar Baby" by Joel
Chandler Harris, found Harris his literary vocation. In the
following years he developed his own plantation mythology in a
series of volumes, narrated by "Uncle Remus", telling colloquial
tales of the wily hero Brer Rabbit (an obvious precursor of Bugs
Bunny) and his clashes with the villain, Brer Fox. Tar Baby is a
collection of some of the finest of these often surreal and
grotesque stories, in the original African American dialect, and is
presented as a classic of American literature for both adult
readers and children of all ages.
It’s been more than a hundred years since the publication of the first Uncle Remus book, and it was in 1955 that all of the delightful and inimitable tales of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer Bear, and Brer Wolf were gathered together in one volume. All of the animal tales from eight books are here, along with the illustrations which originally accompanied them.

Children's animated musical adventure based on the Uncle Remus
folktales. Brer Rabbit (voice of Nick Cannon) is a mischievous and
adventurous rabbit who spends his time trying to outwit the other
animals around him including Brer Fox (D.L. Hughley) and Brer Bear
(Gary Anthony Williams).
For more than a hundred years, the tales of Joel Chandler Harris have entertained and influenced both readers and writers. Nights with Uncle Remus gathers seventy-one of Harris's most popular narratives, featuring African American trickster tales, etiological myths, Sea Island legends, and chilling ghost stories. Told through the distinct voices of four slave storytellers, indispensable tales like "The Moon in the Mill-Pond" and other Brer Rabbit stories have inspired writers from Mark Twain to William Faulkner, Zora Neale Hurston to Toni Morrison, and helped revolutionize modern children's literature and folktale collecting.
This book brings together for the first time in one volume the best stories of Joel Chandler Harris.
