Generalized convexity conditions play a major role in many
modern mechanical applications. They serve as the basis for
existence proofs and allow for the design of advanced algorithms.
Moreover, understanding these convexity conditions helps in
deriving reliable mechanical models.
The book presents an overview of the state of research of advanced finite element technologies. Besides the mathematical analysis, the finite element development and their engineering applications are shown to the reader. The authors give a survey of the methods and technologies concerning efficiency, robustness and performance aspects. The book covers the topics of mathematical foundations for variational approaches and the mathematical understanding of the analytical requirements of modern finite element methods. Special attention is paid to finite deformations, adaptive strategies, incompressible, isotropic or anisotropic material behavior and the mathematical and numerical treatment of the well-known locking phenomenon. Beyond that new results for the introduced approaches are presented especially for challenging nonlinear problems.
This edited volume summarizes research being pursued within the DFG Priority Programme 1748: "Reliable Simulation Methods in Solid Mechanics. Development of non-standard discretisation methods, mechanical and mathematical analysis", the aim of which was to develop novel discretisation methods based e.g. on mixed finite element methods, isogeometric approaches as well as discontinuous Galerkin formulations, including a sound mathematical analysis for geometrically as well as physically nonlinear problems. The Priority Programme has established an international framework for mechanical and applied mathematical research to pursue open challenges on an inter-disciplinary level. The compiled results can be understood as state of the art in the research field and show promising ways of further research in the respective areas. The book is intended for doctoral and post-doctoral students in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics and physics, as well as industrial researchers interested in the field.
The book presents the latest findings in experimental plasticity, crystal plasticity, phase transitions, advanced mathematical modeling of finite plasticity and multi-scale modeling. The associated algorithmic treatment is mainly based on finite element formulations for standard (local approach) as well as for non-standard (non-local approach) continua and for pure macroscopic as well as for directly coupled two-scale boundary value problems. Applications in the area of material design/processing are covered, ranging from grain boundary effects in polycrystals and phase transitions to deep-drawing of multiphase steels by directly taking into account random microstructures.

This book presents new ideas in the framework of novel, finite element discretization schemes for solids and structure, focusing on the mechanical as well as the mathematical background. It also explores the implementation and automation aspects of these technologies. Furthermore, the authors highlight recent developments in mixed finite element formulations in solid mechanics as well as novel techniques for flexible structures at finite deformations. The book also describes automation processes and the application of automatic differentiation technique, including characteristic problems, automatic code generation and code optimization. The combination of these approaches leads to highly efficient numerical codes, which are fundamental for reliable simulations of complicated engineering problems. These techniques are used in a wide range of applications from elasticity, viscoelasticity, plasticity, and viscoplasticity in classical engineering disciplines, such as civil and mechanical engineering, as well as in modern branches like biomechanics and multiphysics.
Cosmopolitan Habitat promotes a research agenda for urban resilience, understanding cities as global avant-garde dealing with the planetary challenges of climate change, migration, and social fragmentation. Within the framework of the Green Deal, Europe is advancing ideas and innovations aimed at manifesting change and long-term strategies for our cities in order to achieve the aims of resilience and sustainability. At the same time, we are facing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on our cities and on our ways of imagining and constructing urban futures. How can cities become new, concrete places to invent, explore, experiment, and live in open communities that are able to face global challenges while also enhancing liveability, inclusivity, and urban economies? Cosmopolitan Habitat presents conceptual models, urban strategies, and spatial practices for the Open City, combining urbanism, architecture, humanities, culture, economy, and politics.

Dynamics is the third volume of a three-volume textbook on Engineering Mechanics. It was written with the intention of presenting to engineering students the basic concepts and principles of mechanics in as simple a form as the subject allows. A second objective of this book is to guide the students in their efforts to solve problems in mechanics in a systematic manner. The simple approach to the theory of mechanics allows for the different educational backgrounds of the students. Another aim of this book is to provide engineering students as well as practising engineers with a basis to help them bridge the gaps between undergraduate studies, advanced courses on mechanics and practical engineering problems. The book contains numerous examples and their solutions. Emphasis is placed upon student participation in solving the problems. The contents of the book correspond to the topics normally covered in courses on basic engineering mechanics at universities and colleges. Volume 1 deals with Statics; Volume 2 contains Mechanics of Materials.
Statics is the first volume of a three-volume textbook on Engineering Mechanics. The authors, using a time-honoured straightforward and flexible approach, present the basic concepts and principles of mechanics in the clearest and simplest form possible to advanced undergraduate engineering students of various disciplines and different educational backgrounds. An important objective of this book is to develop problem solving skills in a systematic manner. Another aim of this volume is to provide engineering students as well as practising engineers with a solid foundation to help them bridge the gap between undergraduate studies on the one hand and advanced courses on mechanics and/or practical engineering problems on the other. The book contains numerous examples, along with their complete solutions. Emphasis is placed upon student participation in problem solving. The contents of the book correspond to the topics normally covered in courses on basic engineering mechanics at universities and colleges. Now in its second English edition, this material has been in use for two decades in Germany, and has benefited from many practical improvements and the authors' teaching experience over the years. New to this edition are the extra supplementary examples available online as well as the TM-tools necessary to work with this method.

Bibliography "It is useless to base any system on a human being." (Henri Bergson. Laughter. 1900) White Teeth is both an ample and intense read as well as a bestselling success after its first publication in 2000. It has found its creative way via television adaptation and a four-hour long theatre play into the school curriculum. In my term paper I will show that White Teeth is a comedy for the 21st century generated through a polyglot plot and transnational locations. Mostly based on the first half of the novel, it is where I could draw up my hypotheses. Archibald Jones' and Samad Iqbal's male friendship is affiliated with society and culture, and therefore useful on reflexion. Their synchronized mid-life crises move towards conflicts exposed in the amusing narrative. Critically user-oriented but limited due to paper-size, I will try to converge to the multilateral scope of new fiction. While researching secondary literature published in the 2000s about postcolonial and transnational corpora many authors claimed superordinate terminology adhered to Zadie Smith's debut novel White Teeth. Nonetheless, serious analytical debates were missing an essential genre making literature enjoyable more than ever. In this term paper, my aim is to prove that Zadie Smith escaped the compelling hassle of both a debut and millennium novel by jocular upda
