The topics range from Baker's method of bounding linear forms in logarithms (authored by Sanda Bujacic and Alan Filipin), metric diophantine approximation discussing in particular the yet unsolved Littlewood conjecture (by Simon Kristensen), Minkowski's geometry of numbers and modern variations by Bombieri and Schmidt (Tapani Matala-aho), and a historical account of related number theory(ists) at the turn of the 19th Century (Nicola M.R. Oswald). Each of these notes serves as an essentially self-contained introduction to the topic. These notes present recent results in the value-distribution theory of L-functions with emphasis on the phenomenon of universality. In 1975, Voronin proved that any non-vanishing analytic function can be approximated uniformly by certain shifts of the Riemann zeta-function in the critical strip. This spectacular universality property has a strong impact on the zero-distribution: Riemann's hypothesis is true if and only if the Riemann zeta-function can approximate itself uniformly (in the sense of Voronin). Meanwhile universality is proved for a large zoo of Dirichlet series, and it is conjectured that all reasonable L-functions are universal. In these notes we prove universality for polynomial Euler products. Our approach follows mainly Bagchi's probabilistic method. We further discuss related topics as, e.g., almost periodicity, density estimates, Nevanlinna theory, and functional independence.

Die Idee der beiden Grundungsvater der Mathematischen Semesterberichte, Heinrich Behnke und Otto Toeplitz, war es, den Zusammenhalt von Universitat und Schule zu starken. Deshalb informierte die von ihnen gegrundete Zeitschrift die Leserinnen und Leser nicht nur uber neue Entwicklungen in der Mathematik, sondern berucksichtigte auch angrenzende Gebiete wie die Mathematikdidaktik, insbesondere die Stoffdidaktik, und Fragen des Mathematikunterrichts. Einen breiten Raum nahmen zudem Beitrage zur Lehrerbildung und zum Verhaltnis von Universitat und Schule ein. Die Auswahl von Beitragen im vorliegenden Band deckt mit mehr als acht Jahrzehnten die gesamte Historie der Semesterberichte ab. Inhaltlich spannt sich der Bogen des vorliegenden Bandes von verschiedenen Standortbestimmungen der Mathematikdidaktik uber Beitrage aus den Anfangen der Zeitschrift in den 1930er-Jahren bis etwa 1960 uber die sogenannte neue Mathematik der 1960er- und 1970er-Jahre zu den nachfolgenden Versuchen, dem Mathematikunterricht weitere inhaltliche Perspektiven jenseits der neuen Mathematik und angesichts moderner Medien zu eroeffnen. Den Abschluss bilden mehrere Artikel zu Fragen der Lehrerbildung.
