Nov. 1840 von Hobarttoirrt, auf VandiemeusLand, nach den Auckland-Inseln, wo er CO bis zum 12. Dez. mit magnetischen Beobachtungen zubrachte, die er auch auf der Campbell-Insel fortsetzte. Am 1. J ner 1841 erreichte er den Polarkreis und mit diesem den Rand des Packeises. Letzteres zeigte sich zwar nicht so furchtbar, als es die franz sischen und amerikanischen Berichte (von Dumont d'Urv le und Wilken) hatten erwarten lassen; aber die Umst nde waren sonst so ung nstig, dass Cap. Ross das weitere Vordringen gegen S den bis zum 5. Jan. einstellte, wo er unter 66 45' Br. und 174 16', Ml. L. (von Greenwich) abermals das Packeis erreichte und ziemlich gl cklich durch dasselbe s dw rts schiffen konnte.
