El manuscrito para la elaboracion de esta novela historica fue escrito por Hanns Kukla en los primeros anos tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en aleman a maquina y en varias copias que el mismo corrigio, basandose en amplisimos diarios que durante toda su vida militar fue escribiendo. Comienza en Silesia en el ano 1933, el dia de la toma del poder mientras el era estudiante. Y termina en 1945/46 tomando un barco en Genova rumbo a Espana, donde se quedaria tras la guerra para formar una familia. Aparte de involuntarias vivencias de muchas atrocidades y del arte de sobrevivir, nos muestra Kukla la parte agradable de la vida, lo instructivo del arte, las mujeres, excursiones por la naturaleza, asi como las costumbres de un Gourmet. Con mucha anticipacion se empieza a hacer pensamientos del sinsentido de una guerra que nunca se ganara y sobre la postguerra. Describe perfectamente a los "simpatizantes" planteandose y cuestionando los "actos" de los grandes gerifaltes.

Comienza esta narracion en Silesia en el ano 1933, el dia de la toma del poder, siendo el estudiante y termina en 1945/46, tomando un barco en Genova rumbo a Espana, donde se quedaria tras la guerra para formar una familia. En 1935 es movilizado, pasando a formar parte del departamente de comunicaciones del Ministerio del Aire del Reich. Durante los siguientes nueve anos, no se pudo liberar ya mas de la vida militar. Primeramente destinado a Espana con la Legion Condor, de civil, ya que estaba en un comando especial de comunicaciones. Termindada la guerra espanola vuelve a aterrizar en la oficina de teletipos de la OKW de la Bendlerstrasse en Berlin. Poco antes de ser licenciado, da comienzo la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Nos describe Kukla la vida libertina del Berlin del primer ano de guerra. En la Pascua de 1941 y contra la voluntad de su comandante, se las ingenia para ser enviado al frente. Como consecuencia de ello, es condenado a la carcel militar de Torgau a tres meses de prision...
