A century years after the foundation of psychoanalysis it is necessary to re-evaluate its position in the modern world and think about its future. The editor of this volume is guided by the conviction that psychoanalysis as a science of man is not only an important therapeutic procedure whose innovations have provided new insights into the human mind, but also a new and even more significant contribution to a theory of culture and critique of society. The authors discuss the various new developments in therapeutic methods, and some of them refer to the discussions of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute during the 1970s. In the debates about a crisis of psychoanalysis which have been going on in the psychoanalytical community since the 1980s, some have called for renewed solidarity with the traditional paradigmata, others demand radical reforms of the training methods and the ending of the self-ghettoization of the psychoanalytic institutes. The authors of this book provide a thoroughgoing investigation into the nature of the crisis and propose ways to resolve it. They view the prognosis for psychoanalysis as a profession as not particularly brilliant and call for major changes in the rules of the psychoanalytic institutes in order to give their members greater freedom to form fresh ideas and discuss new adaptations of therapeutic methods to meet the changing expectations of the modern world. However, their prognosis for psychoanalysis as a human science is more favourable, but they maintain that it will need a great amount of determination and radical reforms for psychoanalysis to act "as an important stimulant in cultural and social developments" (Freud, 1924). What these reforms should look like is one of the main themes discussed in this volume.

The privileged link of psychoanalysis to spoken language does not necessarily facilitate communication among analysts and psychotherapists of different mother tongues. The Journal of European Psychoanalysis published since 1995 has long sought to overcome these linguistic barriers. Traditionally, it has introduced English readers to important European authors, as well as to authors of Latin American countries whose paradigms are close to European "styles." Der funfte Band der "Lindauer Texte" setzt die Tradition der Veroffentlichungen der Beitrage zu den Leitthemen der Lindauer Psychotherapiewochen (LPW) fort. Teil 1 zum Thema "Konflikte in der Triade" greift die zentralen menschlichen Fragen um Liebe, Begehren und Eifersucht auf. Teil 2 befasst sich mit den "Spielregeln in der Psychotherapie, die als eine dem Spiel vergleichbare Interaktionsform verstanden werden kann, welche sich nach Regeln und Planen konzipieren lasst. Als Spielregeln werden die verschiedenen Rahmenbedingungen der Psychotherapie wie Setting, Dauer, Frequenz, Kontext und Arbeitsbundnis angesprochen. Der Band will auch zu Ruckmeldungen uber die Bemuhungen zur Evaluation anregen."

Wnhrend der Lindauer Psychotherapiewochen werden Jahr ffir Jahr aktuelle Themen der Psychotherapie aufgegriffen und in Vortrligen, Vorlesungen und Seminaren in tensiv bearbeitet. Das Interesse an lesenswerten Beitrligen zur psychotherapeuti schen Fort- und Weiterbildung nimmt iiber den Teilnehmerkreis der Lindauer Psy chotherapiewochen hinaus weiter zu. Auch wenn nach wie vor viele der Vortrlige zu den aktuellen psychotherapeutischen Themen in der Zeitschrift "Praxis der Psy chotherapie und Psychosomatik" veroffentlicht werden, erscheint uns eine Zu sammenfassung der wesentlichen Referate in Buchform lohnenswert. Wir kniipfen auf diese Weise auch an eine friihere Tradition an, denn die Vortrlige der ersten Psychotherapiewochen sind seinerzeit bereits als Kongre8blinde erschienen. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Springer-Verlag haben wir uns daher entschlos sen, einen Teil des Vortragsprogramms alsLindauer Texte herauszugeben, und wir danken Herro Prof. Graf-Baumann und Herro Dr. ThiekOtter, daB sie unsere Be miihungen, die Basis ffir eine fundierte psychotherapeutische Fort-und Weiterbil dung zu erweitern, so freundlich unterstiitzt haben. Von den Leitthemen der 40. Psychotherapiewochen "Wandel in der Psychothe rapie" und "Abhlingigkeit" sind in diesem ersten Band der Lindauer Texte 17 Arbeiten zu diesen Themen aufgenommen worden, die z.T. iiberarbeitet wurden. Die Autoren behandeln nicht nur die relevanten klinischen und theoretischen Fragen, sondem es werden von ihnen auch Perspektiven und Visionen eroffnet, philosophische Aussagen reflektiert und historische Oberblicke dargestellt. Das Thema der ersten Woche "Psychotherapie im Wandel" beleuchtet grundle gende Gesichtspunkte zur Entwicklung der Psychotherapie und weist auf Wende punkte hin, die auch ffir die Geschichte der psychotherapeutischen Fort- und Wei terbildung in Lindau charakteristisch sind."
