John Gales, Kathleen Hartin, Luke Bisby
R1,823 Discovery Miles 18 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This SpringerBrief equips readers to develop defensible fire safety designs for a range of concrete structures. It identifies current gaps in the research and provides a more complete understanding of the structural and thermal response of contemporary Post-tensioned (PT) concrete structures to fire. The brief includes chapters on contemporary construction using PT concrete, previous structural fire test research programs, recent research programs, real fire case studies, and current research needs. It explores the progression of PT concrete structures, looking at the sustainability and aesthetic benefits, the ongoing development of stronger concretes, and best practice guidance for improving safety in the event of fire. Designed for practitioners and researchers in fire engineering, this brief is a valuable tool for those studying the impact of fire on concrete, fire safety designs, and building safety optimization. Advanced-level students in civil engineering will also find the content useful.

The Missouri Expedition, 1818-1820 - The Journal of Surgeon John Gale with Related Documents (Paperback): John Gale The Missouri Expedition, 1818-1820 - The Journal of Surgeon John Gale with Related Documents (Paperback)
John Gale; Edited by Roger L. Nichols
R528 Discovery Miles 5 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Repeated clashes between American fur traders and the Plains Indians following the War of 1812 lent urgency to demands that the United States government protect its territory in the West. To remedy the situation, Secretary of War John C. Calhoun planned a military occupation of the upper Mississippi and Missouri River valleys through a cordon of army posts stretching from Green Bay on the Great Lakes west to Montana. Calhoun projected a troop movement, called the Yellowstone Expedition, that grew from one expedition to three - the Missouri, the Mississippi, and the Scientific Expeditions. The Missouri Expedition, described in this volume, was the first venture to implement Calhoun's plan. During the summer of 1818 the expedition, under the command of Colonel Thomas A. Smith, traveled up the Missouri River in keelboats to Cow Island, near present-day Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where a winter camp was built. Defiant bands of American Indians robbed the soldiers of horses, guns, boats, and food, also attacking white traders and messengers along the river. In February 1819, Calhoun appointed Colonel Henry Atkinson, the most experienced officer of the Rifle Regiment, to the command. By summer the troops continued upriver to Council Bluffs, where they built Cantonment Missouri. Expedition surgeon John Gale's account of the Missouri Expedition captures the color and excitement of exploration while revealing the grinding effort and stark hardship of army life in the early nineteenth century. Editor Roger L. Nichols, who established the authorship of the journal, includes expedition letters and military orders to enhance Gale's authentic narrative.

The Horn of Africa has the highest endemism of any region in Africa, and around 70 species are found nowhere else in the world. Many of these are confined to the isolated highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea, but a large number of larks specialise in the arid parts of Somalia and adjoining eastern Ethiopia, whilst the island of Socotra has its own suite of endemic species. The region is also an important migration route and wintering site for many Palearctic birds. This is the first field guide to the birds of this fascinating region, and a companion to Birds of East Africa by two of the same authors. Over 200 magnificent plates by John Gale and Brian Small illustrate every species that has ever occurred in the five countries covered by the guide, and the succinct text covers the key identification criteria. Special attention is paid to the voices of the species, and over 1000 up-to-date colour distribution maps are included. This long-awaited guide is a much-needed addition to the literature on African birds and an essential companion for birders visiting the region.

Egress Modelling of Pedestrians for the Design of Contemporary Stadia (1st ed. 2023): John Gales, Kathryn Chin, Timothy Young,... Egress Modelling of Pedestrians for the Design of Contemporary Stadia (1st ed. 2023)
John Gales, Kathryn Chin, Timothy Young, Elisabetta Carattin, Mei-Yee Man Oram
R4,203 Discovery Miles 42 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides an understanding of people's accessibility needs, and the barriers that may affect people with different identities and circumstances (e.g. different levels of mobility, age, etc.) to alleviate any act of disabling a person and thus offer equal quality of life in the design of stadia. A lack of knowledge exists for stadia concerning demographics, specific accessibility and inclusive design solutions, available movement and behavioural data, and how future growth in attending disabled populations may affect the overall safety of circulation and evacuation in stadia. To address these needs a data collection and modelling were performed and are described in this book. The book recognizes that stadia design is at a revolutionary stage of advancement. Automated data collection technologies and methodologies are described where the authors work towards presentation of big data which can be used for future refinement of modelling technologies and AI routines.

Fire Evacuation and Exit Design in Heritage Cultural Centres (Paperback, 1st ed. 2022): John Gales, Rene Champagne, Georgette... Fire Evacuation and Exit Design in Heritage Cultural Centres (Paperback, 1st ed. 2022)
John Gales, Rene Champagne, Georgette Harun, Hannah Carton, Michael Kinsey
R1,487 Discovery Miles 14 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book highlights human behaviour and architectural considerations for prescriptive code requirements for emergency exits in heritage cultural centers. Closed circuit television camera (CCTV) footage from a Canadian heritage cultural centre was analyzed from three separate unannounced evacuations, where recommendations based on the first two evacuations were implemented for the third. This study aims to (1) develop a baseline for the behaviour and actions of people during the pre-movement and movement stages of emergency egress and evacuation situations and (2) collect behavioural and movement data to aid the fire safety community with the decision process for egress and evacuation strategies and (3) interrogate and highlight architectural barriers in heritage structures with respect to emergency evacuation. The discussion of findings includes occupant behaviour, architectural implications and evacuation modelling and considers the often-conflicting intersection between architectural conservation and fire safety.

Hillforts and the Durotriges - A geophysical survey of Iron Age Dorset (Paperback): Dave Stewart, Miles Russell Hillforts and the Durotriges - A geophysical survey of Iron Age Dorset (Paperback)
Dave Stewart, Miles Russell; Contributions by Paul Cheetham; Commentary by John Gale; Illustrated by Justin Russell
R1,088 Discovery Miles 10 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Hillforts are among the most dramatic and visually striking of prehistoric monuments in the British Isles. Dorset, in southern England, is particularly rich in these Iron Age earthwork enclosures, with over 30 examples being so far recorded, including the internationally famous sites of Maiden Castle, Hod Hill, Badbury Rings and Hambledon Hill. Many have been the subject of archaeological investigation, such as the excavations conducted at Maiden Castle in the 1930s by Tessa and Mortimer Wheeler, but few have, to date, been intensively examined. This volume sets out the results of a detailed programme of non-intrusive geophysical survey conducted across the Dorset hillforts, generating detailed subsurface maps of archaeological features, in the hope of better resolving the phasing, form and internal structure of these iconic sites. The dataset presented here not only helps to change our perception of what hillforts were, how they functioned and what went on within them, but also provides a way of assessing their longevity, reconsidering how they were perceived and reused in subsequent periods. Given the oft-cited association between the Dorset enclosures and the Durotriges tribe, who are thought to have occupied the area in the Later Iron Age, serious consideration is also for the first time given to the belief that hillforts formed the focus of conflict between the native tribes and the armies of imperial Rome in the first century AD.
