Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.

Machiavelli (1469-1527) is the seminal figure in early modern
intellectual history for those living, or wishing to live, in a
functional democracy. What Machiavelli is primarily about, and what
makes him indispensable to those of us living in and struggling to
preserve democracy in America, is the sum of individual and
collective qualities required of a citizen, or what he termed
virtu: a host of traits ranging from manliness to boldness,
ingenuity, excellence, self-esteem, and even stoic resignation. In
a narrative spanning Machiavelli's life and work as one of the
world's most fascinating philosophers, Bernard illuminates for the
modern reader just how relevant his insights are to our own
evolving debate on the appropriate relations between religion and
politics, church and state.
Besides offering a detailed sketch of Machiavelli as a
chancellor in the Italian Soderini Republic (1498-1512), this book
examines the man's political philosophy, particularly his complex
view of republics and principalities, in "The Prince," the
"Discourses," and the "Florentine Histories." It also establishes
the importance of Machiavelli's writing as it evolved during his
exile, especially in the reflexive passages of his plays
"Mandragola" and "Clizia." The book concludes with the potential
uses of Machiavellism in 21st-century mass democracies, as well as
presenting ways in which his legacy lives on in our own activities
as citizens in a democracy.
'The mind unlearns with difficulty what has long been impressed
upon it. ' Seneca Reductionism, is, without question, the most
successful analytical approach available to the experimental
scientist. With the advent of techniques for cloning and sequencing
DNA, and the development of a variety of molecular probes for
localizing macromolecules in cells and tissues, the biologist now
has available the most powerful reductionist tools ever invented.
The application of these new technologies has led to a veritable
explosion of facts regarding the types and organization of
nucleotide sequences present in the genomes of eukaryotes. These
data offer a level of precision and predictability which is
unparalleled in biology. Recombinant DNA techniques were initially
developed to gather information about the structure and
organization of the DNA sequences within a genome. The power and
potential of these techniques, however, extend far beyond simple
data collection of this kind. In an attempt to use the new
technology as a basis for analyzing development and evolution,
attention was first focused on the topic of gene regulation, an
approach that had proven so successful in prokaryotes. It is now
clear that this has not been an adequate approach. Lewin (1984) has
quoted Brenner as stating 'at the beginning it was said that the
answer to the understanding of development was going to come from a
knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of gene control. I doubt
whether anyone believes this any more.
Historical Pattern Archive: Women's Clothing 1837-1969 is the first
book of its kind to capture such a wide range of women's period
patterns in one book, featuring 83 patterns spanning over a century
of clothing. The book offers an accurate pattern of each garment on
a 1/8" graph that can be used to scale the pattern up to its
original size, drawings of each piece from multiple angles, and
instructions about how the original garment was constructed and
what materials were used. Capturing research and information about
garments that would have otherwise stayed hidden or disappeared
permanently due to age, wear, or poor storage conditions, this
volume is designed to be a tool to preserve history through
documenting vintage clothing. Written for historians, reenactors,
costumer makers, and costume designers, Historical Pattern Archive
will enable readers to study the history behind each piece,
implement their original techniques, and recreate unique garments
that are both beautiful and historically accurate.
