Indonesia - The Great Transition (Paperback): John Bresnan Indonesia - The Great Transition (Paperback)
John Bresnan; Contributions by John Bresnan, Annette Clear, Donald Emmerson, Robert W Hefner, …
R1,878 Discovery Miles 18 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Indonesia is in the midst of an epic transition as it moves from decades of authoritarian government to a new era of democratic opening, from years of secular government to a time of struggle over the role of Islam in public life, and from the breakdown of a 'miracle' economy to a search for resilience in the face of global forces. In this timely work, leading scholars analyze the causes of the social, political, and economic crises that erupted in Indonesia in the late 1990s, the responses of the elite and civil society, and the prospects for continuing reform. In the process, they explore such issues as the relevance of the nation-state in an age of globalization, the role of Islam in politics and violence, the strengths and weaknesses of a negotiated route to democratic governance, the relationship of corruption and structural reform to economic growth, and the prospects for stability in Southeast Asia. The first book to grapple with the scale and complexity of this historic transition, this work offers a clear and compelling introduction to the Indonesian experience for students with an interest in the problems of post-colonial states, to scholars in comparative Asian studies, and to anyone seeking a serious yet accessible introduction to the world's largest Islamic democracy. At Home Abroad - A Memoir of the Ford Foundation in Indonesia, 1953-1973 (Paperback): John Bresnan At Home Abroad - A Memoir of the Ford Foundation in Indonesia, 1953-1973 (Paperback)
John Bresnan
R697 Discovery Miles 6 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1953, as part of the Eisenhower/Dulles response to Senator Joseph McCarthy's charges of security risks in its staff, John Bresnan was fired from the U.S. foreign service. This turned out to be a blessing is disguise as he was quickly hired by the Ford Foundation in its New York headquarters, and in 1961 was appointed Assistant Representative to Indonesia. Four years later, Bresnan was given another assignment: close the office. What follows is a personal recollection of the philanthropic work by the Ford Foundation during a critical period of development for the country. It details the Ford Foundation's successes and failures as well as his relationships with a wide array of characters: from John D. Rockefeller III to Soedjatmoko, from McGeorge Bundy to the Sultan of Yogyakarta. Based on extensive research in the archives of the Ford Foundation as well as personal files, At Home Abroad is an engaging insight into the inner workings of one of the largest philanthropic organizations and their mission in the developing world. This book should be required reading for anyone interested in the role of American philanthropy overseas. ABOUT THE AUTHOR JOHN BRESNAN was Assistant Representative of the Ford Foundation in Indonesia from 1961 to 1965, Representative there from 1969 to 1973, and Head of the Office for Asia and the Pacific at Ford's headquarters in New York from 1973 to 1982. Since then, he has been a Senior Research Scholar at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University, where he has written and edited books on Indonesia, the Philippines, and Southeast Asia that were published by Columbia University Press, Princeton University Press, and the Council on Foreign Relations.
