After Eden - A Short History of the World: John Charles Chasteen After Eden - A Short History of the World
John Charles Chasteen
R897 R752 Discovery Miles 7 520 Save R145 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In After Eden, prominent Latin American historian John Charles Chasteen provides a concise history of world, in which he explores the origins and persistence of the timeless phenomena of humanity’s inhumanity to itself. Where did it come from? Why has it been so prevalent throughout our history? And, most importantly, can we overcome it? Chasteen argues that to do so, we must understand our shared past, and that while much of it is violent, we can look for inspiration from major periods when we strived to live more co-operatively, such as our early foraging periods; to the creation of universal religions and ethical systems; to the birth of the ideas of individual liberty and freedom; to the rise of socialism in response to the massive excesses of global capitalism; to the civil rights and decolonisation movements of the twentieth century; and to the environmental and social justice movements of today.

The Concept of the Foreign - An Interdisciplinary Dialogue (Paperback): Rebecca Saunders The Concept of the Foreign - An Interdisciplinary Dialogue (Paperback)
Rebecca Saunders; Contributions by Margot Badran, John Charles Chasteen, Peter Redfield, Coco Owen, …
R1,174 Discovery Miles 11 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Concept of the Foreign investigates the diverse and consequential uses of the concept of the foreign-a formidable and hitherto untheorized force in everyday discourse and practice. This highly original work-whose experimental nature moves beyond traditional academic bounds-undertakes to theorize the meanings, deployments, and consequences of 'foreignness', a term largely overlooked by academic debates. Innovative in format, the book comprises an introductory theoretical dialogue and seven essays, each authored by a scholar from a different discipline-anthropology, literary theory, psychology, philosophy, social work, history, and women's studies-who investigate how his/her disciplines engage and define the concept of the foreign. Drawing out literal and metaphorical meanings of 'foreignness' this wide-ranging volume offers much to scholars of postcolonial, gender, and cultural studies seeking new approaches to the study of alterity.

National Rhythms, African Roots - The Deep History of Latin American Popular Dance (Paperback, New): John Charles Chasteen National Rhythms, African Roots - The Deep History of Latin American Popular Dance (Paperback, New)
John Charles Chasteen
R948 Discovery Miles 9 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When John Charles Chasteen learned that Simon Bolivar, the Liberator, danced on a banquet table to celebrate Latin American independence in 1824, he tried to visualise the scene. How, he wondered, did the Liberator dance? Did he bounce stiffly in his dress uniform? Or did he move his hips? In other words, how high had African dance influences reached in Latin American societies? A vast social gap separated Bolivar from people of African descent; however, Chasteen's research shows that popular culture could bridge the gap. Fast-paced and often funny, this book explores the history of Latin American popular dance before the twentieth century. Chasteen first focuses on Havana, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro, where dances featuring a 'transgressive close embrace' (forerunners of today's salsa, tango, and samba) emerged by 1900. Then, digging deeper in time, Chasteen uncovers the historical experiences that moulded Latin American popular dance, including carnival celebrations, the social lives of slaves, European fashions, and, oddly enough, religious processions. The relationship between Latin American dance and nationalism, it turns out, is very deep, indeed.

The Vortex - A Novel (Paperback): José Eustasio Rivera The Vortex - A Novel (Paperback)
José Eustasio Rivera; Translated by John Charles Chasteen
R592 Discovery Miles 5 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Published in 1924 and widely acknowledged as a major work of twentieth-century Latin American literature, José Eustasio Rivera's The Vortex follows the harrowing adventures of the young poet Arturo Cova and his lover Alicia as they flee Bogotá and head into the wild and woolly backcountry of Colombia. After being separated from Alicia, Arturo leaves the high plains for the jungle, where he witnesses firsthand the horrid conditions of those forced or tricked into tapping rubber trees. A story populated by con men, rubber barons, and the unrelenting landscape, The Vortex is both a denunciation of the sensational human-rights abuses that took place during the Amazonian rubber boom and one of the most famous renderings of the natural environment in Latin American literary history.

Santa - A Novel of Mexico City (Paperback, New edition): John Charles Chasteen Santa - A Novel of Mexico City (Paperback, New edition)
John Charles Chasteen
R1,035 Discovery Miles 10 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This enduring classic of Mexican literature traces the path to ruination of a country girl, Santa, who moves to Mexico City after she is impregnated and abandoned by her lover and subsequently shunned by her family. Once in the city, Santa turns to prostitution and soon gains prominence as Mexico City's most sought-after courtesan. Despite the opportunities afforded by her success, including the chance to quit prostitution, Santa is propelled by her personal demons toward her ultimate downfall. This evocative novel-justly famous for its vividly detailed depiction of the cityscape and the city's customs, social interactions, and political activities-assumed singular importance in Mexican popular culture after its original publication in 1903. The book inspired Mexico's first ""talkie"" and several other film adaptations, a music score, a radio series, a television soap opera, and a pornographic comic book. Naturalist writer Federico Gamboa, who was also a lawyer and politician, reveals much about Mexican mores and culture at the start of the twentieth century and beyond, from expectations regarding gender roles to the myth of the corrupting and decadent city. In describing how Santa is at the mercy of social problems beyond her control, Gamboa provides a rich historical portrayal of widespread conditions in the years leading to the Mexican Revolution. |This enduring classic of Mexican literature traces the path to ruination of a country girl, Santa, who moves to Mexico City after she is impregnated and abandoned by her lover and subsequently shunned by her family. Sara Castro-Klaren, John Charles Chasteen
R679 Discovery Miles 6 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How did the nationalisms of Latin America's many countries--elaborated in everything from history and fiction to cookery--arise from their common backgrounds in the Spanish and Portuguese empires and their similar populations of mixed European, native, and African origins? "Beyond Imagined Communities: Reading and Writing the Nation in Nineteenth-Century Latin America," discards one answer and provides a rich collection of others.

These essays began as a critique of the argument by Benedict Anderson's highly influential book "Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origin and Spread of Nationalism." Anderson traces Latin American nationalisms to local circulation of colonial newspapers and tours of duty of colonial administrators, but this book shows the limited validity of these arguments.

Instead, "Beyond Imagined Communities" shows how more diverse cultural influences shaped Latin American nationalisms. Four historians examine social situations: Francois-Xavier Guerra studies various forms of political communication; Tulio Halperin Donghi, political parties; Sarah C. Chambers, the feminine world of salons; and Andrew Kirkendall, the institutions of higher education that trained the new administrators. Next, four critics examine production of cultural objects: Fernando Unzueta investigates novels; Sara Castro-Klaren, archeology and folklore; Gustavo Verdesio, suppression of unwanted archeological evidence; and Beatriz Gonzalez Stephan, national literary histories and international expositions.

The Mystery of Samba - Popular Music and National Identity in Brazil (Paperback, New edition): John Charles Chasteen The Mystery of Samba - Popular Music and National Identity in Brazil (Paperback, New edition)
John Charles Chasteen
R1,126 Discovery Miles 11 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Samba is Brazil's ""national rhythm"", the symbol of its culture and nationhood. It symbolizes the racial and cultural mixture that, since the 1930s, most Brazilians have come to believe defines their unique national identity. But how did Brazil become ""the Kingdom of Samba"" only a few decades after abolishing slavery in 1888? The author of this book shows that the nationalization of samba actually rested on a long history of relations between different social groups, often working at cross-purposes to one another.

The Contemporary History of Latin America (Paperback): Tulio Halperin Donghi The Contemporary History of Latin America (Paperback)
Tulio Halperin Donghi; Edited by John Charles Chasteen
R995 Discovery Miles 9 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For a quarter of a century, Tulio Halperin Donghi's "Historia Contemporanea de America Latina" has been the most influential and widely read general history of Latin America in the Spanish-speaking world. Unparalleled in scope, attentive to the paradoxes of Latin American reality, and known for its fine-grained interpretation, it is now available for the first time in English. Revised and updated by the author, superbly translated, this landmark of Latin American historiography will be accessible to an entirely new readership.
Beginning with a survey of the late colonial landscape, "The Contemporary History of Latin America "traces the social, economic, and political development of the region to the late twentieth century, with special emphasis on the period since 1930. Chapters are organized chronologically, each beginning with a general description of social and economic developments in Latin America generally, followed by specific attention to political matters in each country. What emerges is a well-rounded and detailed picture of the forces at work throughout Latin American history.
This book will be of great interest to all those seeking a general overview of modern Latin American history, and its distinctive Latin American voice will enhance its significance for all students of Latin American history.
