Generations - Hastings Fishing Families (Hardcover): John Cole Generations - Hastings Fishing Families (Hardcover)
John Cole
R643 Discovery Miles 6 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Generations: The Fishing Families of Hastings is a photographic portrayal from the 1990s to the present day of the men and women of Britain's oldest beach-launched fishing community. Realised by the photojournalist and Hastings resident John Cole, the book portrays a unique community that may soon become extinct. Generations is in the tradition of such classic photojournalists as Sebastiao Salgado, Don McCullin and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Cole's images document the passing of a way of working, of skills that have been handed down from generation to generation.

A Geography of the European Union (Paperback, 2nd edition): John Cole A Geography of the European Union (Paperback, 2nd edition)
John Cole
R1,887 Discovery Miles 18 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Can the European Union continue to grow and also converge? Is uniformity within the union desirable? The European Union has grown into a supranational entity formed from a mosaic of diverse regions. Its enlargement to encompass a number of Central European countries seems only a matter of time. With the EU's political and economic importance growing globally, the Union's influence is increasingly being felt within its member states. A geography is emerging with pressures to reduce regional disparities by a process of convergence. This volume provides a comprehensive introduction to the European Union, its identity, problems and prospects. Focusing on the key issues of integration and enlargement, the authors examine the major economic, social, environmental and political aspects of the EU, both in terms of its individual regions and as a system of interdependent states that form the single EU entity. Assessment of controversial issues is frank: problems of unemployment, social stress, ageing and the place of women are covered, prompting readers to form their own interpretations.

Archaeology by Experiment (Paperback): John Coles Archaeology by Experiment (Paperback)
John Coles
R1,592 Discovery Miles 15 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Experimental archaeology is a new approach to the study of early man. By reconstructing and testing models of ancient equipment with the techniques available to early man, we learn how he lived, hunted, fought and built. What did early man eat? How did he store and cook his food? How did he make his tools and weapons and pottery? Such everyday questions, besides the more dramatic mysteries associated with the monuments of Easter Island and Stonehenge and the colonization of Polynesia, can all be explored by experiment.

A practical guide to the various modern methods of discovery, excavation and recording of the remains left by prehistoric man in Britain. This volume presents a global view of today's most pressing issues through an analysis of the twelve major regions of the world. Environmental degradation, natural catastrophe, population pressures and human conflict all impact in different ways and to different degrees on the society and environment of these regions. Economic and political restructuring within each region is covered, and topics include: natural resources; agriculture; industry and services; the role of the military; and the impact of global economic change. This work is intended as an introduction for students studying the changing geography of the world, but should also provide a useful overview to students researching specific regions, seeking comparative analysis of regions, or following general courses on the economic and political geography of both the post-industrial and the developing worlds. Over 250 photographs, maps and figures complement a range of boxed case-studies, key points, questions and guides to further reading.

American Hybrid - A Norton Anthology of New Poetry (Paperback): David St.John, Cole Swensen American Hybrid - A Norton Anthology of New Poetry (Paperback)
David St.John, Cole Swensen
R921 R803 Discovery Miles 8 030 Save R118 (13%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As Cole Swensen argues in the introduction to this comprehensive new anthology, the long-acknowledged "fundamental division" between experimental and traditional is disappearing in American poetry in favor of hybrid approaches that blend trends from accessible lyricism to linguistic exploration. The focus in American Hybrid is on the blend; the more than seventy poets featured here--including Jorie Graham, Albert Goldbarth, and Lyn Hejinian--have found new and often unique ways to reconfigure the innumerable and sometimes conflicting voices of the past thirty years. The editors have crafted short introductory essays on each of the poets in the anthology, providing biographical backgrounds and positioning them within the current of contemporary poetry. This new anthology is essential reading for those who care about the present moment--and the future--of American verse.

John Wilson did more than anyone else to prevent and cure blindness, and help blind people, throughout the world between the 1940s and his death in 1999. In addition, he made a significant contribution to the cause of disabled people in general. His achievements deserve comparison with those of other charismatic figures such as Helen Keller and Albert Schweitzer. A man of action and unflagging energy, with exceptional determination, imagination and compassion, and analytical and organizational ability, he changed millions of people's lives for the better by developing systems and techniques for preventing and curing blindness, and by spurring on the process by which blind people have come to be able to play a full, active and creative role in society. His story is a moving one. Blinded himself in a school experiment in 1931 at the age of twelve, he went on to read law at Oxford. After joining the National Institute for the Blind as an administrator, he took part in 1946-7 in an epic government-sponsored tour of the African and Middle Eastern territories in what was then the British Empire that lasted nine months, studying the intractable problems of blindness there. It led to the formation of what was to become the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind, now known as Sight Savers International. In the wake of his sustained campaigns for the cure and prevention of blindness, above all in Africa and the Indian sub-continent, underpinned by the indomitable support of his wife Jean, John Wilson became a leading activist and mentor for blind and disabled people both at the UN and world-wide; and he was to found further important institutions such as the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and Impact, which focusses on the universal challenge of avoidable disability. He was an enthusiastic globe-trotter, a powerful orator, a much-loved member of his family and a highly respected friend and colleague of large numbers of people with whom he worked across the continents. This inspiring tale of how one remarkable man travelled the world and transformed countless lives will have a strong appeal to the general public. It will also be of direct interest to people involved in charities and other institutions, particularly those concerned with blindness and disability.Meticulously researched, it is primarily based on John Wilson's Braille diaries and his other papers, the records at Sight Savers and interviews in many different countries with people who knew him.The first daisy book for all, containing these CD-ROM text versions: Large print, daisy audio and full text, screen reader and braille

The Fundamentals of Interior Architecture (Paperback): John Coles The Fundamentals of Interior Architecture (Paperback)
John Coles
R1,127 Discovery Miles 11 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Fundamentals of Interior Architecture (second edition) offers an introduction to the key elements involved in the creation of aesthetically appealing and practically appropriate interior architecture. The book contains five sections, which together encapsulate the principle ideas, skills and knowledge that are employed in effective interior architecture and design. Areas of study include space and form, site and function, materials and texture, light and mood, and presentation and representation. Emphasis is placed on spatial solutions that support the needs of the client and which recognise the qualities of the building and its situation. The theory is contextualised using practitioner biographies and work from leading designers. The new material in this highly illustrated second edition includes interviews with leading practitioners. In addition, at the end of each chapter there are new projects to encourage readers to explore further the creative possibilities of working as an interior architect.
