Continuum's Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and
accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that
students and readers can find especially challenging. Concentrating
specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to
fathom, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas,
guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding
material. Noam Chomsky is one of the most influential thinkers of
the twentieth-century. His work in linguistics, philosophy and
political theory has spanned six decades, and has been met with
critical acclaim and controversy in equal measure. This book is an
introduction to Chomsky's theoretical writings, but also a critical
engagement with his work. Chomsky: A Guide for the Perplexed covers
every aspect of Chomsky's thought, from transformational grammar to
political dissent.
This is a book where a husband and wife are taken to a fantasy
realm. There they catch a glimpse of what it might mean to see why
it is that some things happen the way they do. It is filled with
suspense and plenty of humor. This deeply thought-provoking book
really opens up the concept that it is okay for us not to know
everything, but it is unacceptable for us to blindly agree with
either side of the "Is there a God?" argument. You will laugh, you
will feel uncomfortable, and after reading this, you will want to
tell your friends all about it.

aIn this fascinating ethnographic account, John Collins shows
how Palestinians remember, re-shape, and reinvent in their popular
imagination the first Inti-fada, or uprising, of 1987-1993.a
--Middle East Journal
"Theoretically sharp and well written, "Occupied by Memory"
propels the scholarship on Palestinians and perpetual states of
violence in new and promising directions.
--Julie Peteet, author of "Gender in Crisis: Women and the
Palestinian Resistance Movement"
"The book will be of interest not only to scholars of the Middle
East, but also to those interested in nationalism, discourse
analysis, social movements and oral history."
--"Advance News"
""In Occupied by Memory," John Collins asks the 'intifada
generation' to remember aloud the first intifada, what it might
have meant, and what it has come to mean for them now. At once
provocative and sensitive, John Collins's narrative probes deeply
into the history of the last decade of the Palestinian struggle for
self-determination, human rights, and social justice."
--Barbara Harlow, author of "After Lives: Legacies of Revolutionary
Writing"
"A powerfully honest work and a tremendous contribution to the
literature on memory and violence in the Middle East. Superbly
narrated, Occupied by Memory is compassionate but not sentimental,
theoretically astute, and empathetically written.
--Ussama Makdisi, author of "TheCulture of Sectarianism: Community,
History, and Violence in Nineteenth-Century Ottoman Lebanon"
Occupied by Memory explores the memories of the first
Palestinian intifada. Based on extensive interviews with members of
the "intifada generation," those who were between 10 and 18 years
old when the intifada began in 1987, the book provides a detailed
look at the intifada memories of ordinary Palestinians.
These personal stories are presented as part of a complex and
politically charged discursive field through which young
Palestinians are invested with meaning by scholars, politicians,
journalists, and other observers. What emerges from their memories
is a sense of a generation caught between a past that is
simultaneously traumatic, empowering, and exciting--and a future
that is perpetually uncertain. In this sense, Collins argues that
understanding the stories and the struggles of the intifada
generation is a key to understanding the ongoing state of emergency
for the Palestinian people. The book will be of interest not only
to scholars of the Middle East but also to those interested in
nationalism, discourse analysis, social movements, and oral
history.
The contributions in this volume were presented at a NATO
Advanced Study Institute held in Erice, Italy, 4-19 July 2013. Many
aspects of important research into nanophotonics, plasmonics,
semiconductor materials and devices, instrumentation for bio
sensing to name just a few, are covered in depth in this volume.
The growing connection between optics and electronics, due to the
increasing important role plaid by semiconductor materials and
devices, find their expression in the term photonics, which also
reflects the importance of the photon aspect of light in the
description of the performance of several optical systems.
Nano-structures have unique capabilities that allow the enhanced
performance of processes of interest in optical and photonic
devices. In particular these structures permit the nanoscale
manipulation of photons, electrons and atoms; they represent a very
hot topic of research and are relevant to many devices and
applications.
The various subjects bridge over the disciplines of physics,
biology and chemistry, making this volume of interest to people
working in these fields. The emphasis is on the principles behind
each technique and on examining the full potential of each
technique."
CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVES AND CONTEMPORARY MEDICAL MORALS A Catholic
perspective on medical morals antedates the current world wide
interest in medical and biomedical ethics by many centuries 5].
Discussions about the moral status of the fetus, abortion,
contraception, and sterilization can be found in the writings of
the Fathers and Doctors of the Church. Teachings on various aspects
of medical morals were scattered throughout the penitential books
of the early medieval church and later in more formal treatises
when moral theology became recog nized as a distinct discipline.
Still later, medical morality was incorpor ated into the many
pastoral works on medicine. Finally, in the contemporary period,
works that strictly focus on medical ethics are produced by
Catholic moral theologians who have special interests in matters
medical. Moreover, this long tradition of teaching has been put
into practice in the medical moral directives governing the
operation of hospitals under Catholic sponsorship. Catholic
hospitals were monitored by Ethics Committees long before such
committees were recommended by the New Jersey Court in the Karen
Ann Quinlan case or by the President's Commission in 1983 ( 8, 9]).
Underlying the Catholic moral tradition was the use of the
casuistic method, which since the 17th and 18th centuries was
employed by Catholic moralists to study and resolve concrete
clinical ethical dilem mas. The history of casuistry is of renewed
interest today when the case method has become so widely used in
the current revival of interest in medical ethics ll]."
The book gives a comprehensive introduction to nano-optics The book
is of interest to physicists, biologists and chemists The book may
suggest directions to doctoral thesis investigations This volume
presents a considerable number of interrelated contributions
dealing with the new scientific ability to shape and control matter
and electromagnetic fields on a sub-wavelength scale. The topics
range from the fundamental ones, such as photonic metamateriials,
plasmonics and sub-wavelength resolution to the more applicative,
such as detection of single molecules, tomography on a micro-chip,
fluorescence spectroscopy of biological systems, coherent control
of biomolecules, biosensing of single proteins, terahertz
spectroscopy of nanoparticles, rare earth ion-doped nanoparticles,
random lasing, and nanocoax array architecture. The various
subjects bridge over the disciplines of physics, biology and
chemistry, making this volume of interest to people working in
these fields. The emphasis is on the principles behind each
technique and on examining the full potential of each technique.
The contributions that appear in this volume were presented at a
NATO Advanced Study Institute that was held in Erice, Italy, 3-18
July, 2011. The pedagogical aspect of the Institute is reflected in
the topics presented in this volume.
The investigation of light-matter interactions in materials,
especially those on the nanoscale, represents perhaps the most
promising avenue for scientific progress in the fields of photonics
and plasmonics. This book examines a variety of topics, starting
from fundamental principles, leading to the current state of the
art research. For example, this volume includes a chapter on the
sensing of biological molecules with optical resonators
(microspheres) combined with plasmonic systems, where the response
this system are described in a fundamental and elegant manner using
coupled mode theory. Symmetry plays a major role in the book. One
chapter on time reversal symmetry in electromagnetic theory
describes how to control the properties of light (e.g. scattering
and directionality of the flow of light) in materials with certain
topological invariants. Another chapter where symmetry is prominent
reformulates, using a gentle and pedagogical approach, Maxwell's
Equations into a new set of fields that reveal a "handedness"
symmetry in electromagnetic theory, which can be applied to
photonic systems in, for example, the sensing of chiral molecules
and understanding the conditions for zero reflection. Also, for
students and researchers starting in the field of nanoplasmonics,
the book includes a tutorial on the finite element time domain
simulation of nanoplasmonic systems. Other topics include photonic
systems for quantum computing, nanoplasmonics, and optical
properties of nano and bulk materials. The authors take a
pedagogical approach to their topic, making the book an excellent
reference for graduate students and scientists starting in the
fields of photonics or plasmonics.
The world is moving away from demand-driven electricity markets
supplied by centralized generation and distribution of
fossil-fuel-produced electricity. Increasing reliance on
weather-dependent renewable sources will require a shift toward a
supply-driven paradigm, while beneficial electrification, including
widespread adoption of electric vehicles, heat pumps, and batteries
will offer considerable but widely distributed demand flexibility
that can be used to compensate for supply variability. The
open-source Power Trading Agent Competition (Power TAC) platform
simulates a decentralized future, modeling the high complexity of
future retail electricity markets. This book describes a
variety of approaches to profitable trading in realistic wholesale
and retail electricity markets. It presents actionable insights
from extensive exploration of policies and business models for
retail electricity markets gained from a decade of Power TAC
tournaments, and from research inspired by the Power TAC
experience. Featuring contributions from tournament designers,
competitors, and scientists combining best practices from computer
science and economics and management science, this book is of
benefit to academics, researchers, practitioners and policy makers
in sustainable energy and wholesale and retail electricity
markets.Â
