Essays on aspects of the natural world, its heritage, and how best
to preserve it. Europe's engagement from the late sixteenth century
onwards in scientific Earth science inquiry has generated numerous
and varied collections of minerals, rocks, and fossils, together
with their associated archives, artworks and publications, forming
a rich cultural geoheritage held in major private and especially
royal and aristocratic collections, museums, universities, archives
and libraries. The mines, quarries, geological structures,
landforms, minerals, rocks and fossils - or geodiversity - that
underpin these collections populate past and present-day Earth
science literature. However, for too long their scientific,
historic and cultural significance was not universally recognised
and generally they were not accorded adequate resources and
protection - or geoconservation. Hence, geotourism was developed in
the 1990s to raise public awareness of Europe's geoheritage and
geodiversity and to promote itsgeoconservation; the volume's
theoretical essays and case studies examine these four core
geoelements and provide a timely introduction for anyone interested
in natural history museums, countryside management, and
landscape-basedtourism. Dr Thomas A. Hose is an Honorary Research
Associate in the School of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol.
He has pioneered the recognition of and research into geotourism,
and is the author of the world's first doctoral thesis on the
subject. Contributors: Kevin Crawford, Peter Davis, John E. Gordon.

The third edition of this definitive and popular book continues to
pursue the question: what is the most efficient way to pack a large
number of equal spheres in n-dimensional Euclidean space? The
authors also examine such related issues as the kissing number
problem, the covering problem, the quantizing problem, and the
classification of lattices and quadratic forms. There is also a
description of the applications of these questions to other areas
of mathematics and science such as number theory, coding theory,
group theory, analogue-to-digital conversion and data compression,
n-dimensional crystallography, dual theory and superstring theory
in physics. New and of special interest is a report on some recent
developments in the field, and an updated and enlarged
supplementary bibliography with over 800 items.
Cryptozoologicon is a celebration of the myths, legends, evolution
and biology of hidden animals. Always sceptical, but always willing
to indulge in speculative fun, Cryptozoologicon aims to provide a
new way to approach cryptozoology: as fictional biology.

On 23 November 2010, the Air Force chief of staff tasked the Air
Force Research Institute (AFRI) to review current Air Force leader
development, focusing on the preparation of Airmen for the evolving
security challenges in the joint and service environments. This
study identifies the characteristics desired for successful senior
leaders over the next generation, reviews current Air Force officer
development, and recommends changes as indicated to the current
officer development process.
Memories of the Catskills: The Making of a Hotel, by Alvin L.
Lesser, with a foreword by John Conway, Sullivan County Historian,
takes the reader back to a time and place that was like no other.
Families wishing to get out of the stifling heat of a New York City
summer and other nearby crowded areas, found the perfect escape in
"the Catskills." By sharing an insider's view of one person's life
in this magical arena, Lesser lets readers experience the fun and
the work that went into creating a place that people came back to
year after year. Memories of the Catskills is a candid and charming
memoir about the rise and fall of the "Borscht Belt." Lesser Lodge,
a small hotel where the author spent the better part of his
childhood, lies at the center of the heartfelt tale. Famous stars
of yesteryear came to entertain in the Borscht Belt at Lesser
Lodge. The Lodge survived the depression era and then flourished
during the years of economic recovery and growth. Not just the
story of the Lesser family, but the warmth of people who made
others welcome by providing a respite which made them all family--
entertainers and guests alike.
