An introduction to the principles of climate change science with an
emphasis on the empirical evidence for climate change and a warming
world. Additional readings are given at the end of each chapter. A
list of "Things to Know" opens each chapter. Chapters are arranged
so that the student is first introduced to the scientific
method(s), examples of the use of the scientific method from other
sciences drawn from the history of science with an emphasis on
climate science. Climate science is treated in each chapter based
on the premise of global warming. Chapter treatments on the
atmosphere. biosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and anthroposphere
and their inter-relationships are given.

Central to Formal Methods is the so-called Correctness Theorem
which relates a specification to its correct Implementations. This
theorem is the goal of traditional program testing and, more
recently, of program verification (in which the theorem must be
proved). Proofs are difficult, though even with the use of powerful
theorem provers. This volume explains and illustrates an
alternative method, which allows the construction of (necessarily
correct) algorithms from a specification using algebraic
transformations and refinement techniques which prevent the
introduction of errors. Based on teaching material used extensively
at Loughborough University, John Cooke introduces the basics, using
simple examples and lots of detailed working (which can often be
re-used).
Constructing Correct Software will provide invaluable reading
for students and practitioners of Computer Science and Software
Engineering to whom correctness of software is of prime
importance.
One man's voyage through life It's the late 1960s - a decade of
Mods and Rockers; Beats and Hippies and full of peace and love.
Aged seventeen, John Cooke ventures out on the roads, hitch-hiking
around the UK. On the South Coast, he gets caught up with the
romance of the sea and foregoes his freedom when he signs away more
than nine years of his life by joining the Royal Navy. It is only
after signing on the dotted line that he realises he's made a
monumental mistake; and there is no legitimate way out. John
recounts his adventures as an adolescent who sails to the Far East;
visiting Cape Town, Singapore, Sydney and Perth along the way. His
voyage through the tempestuous sea of life was interspersed with
time spent in Military Corrective Training Centres as well as in
the Royal Navy Detention Quarters. But this epic journey is only
the beginning for John on his road to discovery...

In Tasmania, John Cook is known as 'The Keeper of the Flame'. As
one of Australia's longest-serving lighthouse keepers, John spent
26 years tending Tasmania's well-known kerosene 'lights' at Tasman
Island, Maatsuyker Island and Bruny Island. From sleepless nights
keeping the lights alive, battling the wind and sea as they ripped
at gutters and flooded stores, raising a joey, tending sheep and
keeping ducks and chickens, the life of a keeper was one of
unexpected joy and heartbreak. But for John, nothing was more
heartbreaking than the introduction of electric lights, and the
lighthouses that were left empty forever. Evocatively told, The
Last Lighthouse Keeper is a love story between a man and a dying
way of life, as well as a celebration of wilderness and solitude.
