Most of Bonhoeffer's books are now widely known. Premature as his death was, thoughtful people recognize in him one of the most original thinkers of our time. His spiritual legacy-the most striking part of it the result of his meditations in prison under the Nazis -has begun to influence the preaching of the Universal Church. Plainly, such a theologian deserves a full and first-class study. This is now provided by Professor Godsey, who analyses and comments on all the Bonhoeffer books, including some not yet available in English, and on many of the occasional writings, setting them in the context of Bonhoeffer's life and interpreting their intellectual and spiritual significance.

"Cheap grace is the mortal enemy of our church. Our struggle today is for costly grace." And with that sharp warning to his own church, which was engaged in bitter conflict with the official nazified state church, Dietrich Bonhoeffer began his book Discipleship (formerly entitled The Cost of Discipleship). Originally published in 1937, it soon became a classic exposition of what it means to follow Christ in a modern world beset by a dangerous and criminal government. At its center stands an interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount: what Jesus demanded of his followers-and how the life of discipleship is to be continued in all ages of the post- resurrection church. "Every call of Jesus is a call to death," Bonhoeffer wrote. His own life ended in martyrdom on April 9, 1945. Freshly translated from the German critical edition, Discipleship provides a more accurate rendering of the text and extensive aids and commentary to clarify the meaning, context, and reception of this work and its attempt to resist the Nazi ideology then infecting German Christian churches.

"For the Sake of the World" gathers the presentations from one of the most successful Barth conferences ever held in the United States. Here thirteen of Karl Barthbs most astute interpreters explore in fresh ways a variety of themes from Barthbs life and work, showing how Barth still has much to offer the contemporary world.

Organized as a dialogue between the contributors, this volume features cutting-edge studies followed by substantial critical responses. The subjects discussed in detail include the Barth-Brunner correspondence, Barthbs position on the Jews during the Hitler era, Barth and politics, Barthbs doctrine of providence, Barthbs thought on Christian love and ethics, and Barthbs conception of time and eternity. The volume ends with a winsome memoir of Barth as a teacher.
