Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
This genealogy, originally published in 1881, records over 6,000
descendants of Captain George Denison, of Stonington, Connecticut.
It is speculated that Capt. Denison was born in 1618 and that he
arrived in Roxbury, Connecticut, with his mother, father and
brothers in 1631. Upon the death of his first wife, Denison
traveled to England to serve under Cromwell in the Army of the
Parliament. He served with distinction but was wounded in battle
and forced to retire from the field. While recuperating, he became
acquainted with his nurse, Ann Borodell, whom he married and
brought back to Connecticut, this time settling in Stonington. He
is remembered in the region as a brilliant Indian-fighter (likened
to a Scottish highlander for his boldness and ferocity in battle)
as well as an honored public official. The bulk of the text follows
the lines of Capt. Denison's three sons: John, George and William,
but includes a great deal of information on the families of his six
daughters. An informative appendix provides a biographical and
historical sketch of Capt. Denison and John Denison (including
reprints of their wills), and a genealogy for Major General Daniel
Denison. An informative appendix provides a biographical and
historical sketch of Capt. Denison and John Denison and additional
genealogies for Major General Daniel Denison, Daniel Denison,
Robert Denison, George Dennison and a number of other families
received by the compilers too late for inclusion in the main body
of the text. The text is further enhanced by two indices of full
names, one listing Denisons and the other hidden names. Also
included is a facsimile of the Denison coat of arms.
