'A bookshop is a first-rate place for unobtrusive observation,' he
continued. 'One can remain in it an indefinite time, dipping into
one book after another, all over the place.' Mr Richard Dodsley,
owner of a fine second-hand bookshop on Charing Cross Road, has
been found murdered in the cold hours of the morning. Shot in his
own office, few clues remain besides three cigarette ends, two
spent matches and a few books on the shelves which have been
rearranged. In an investigation spanning the second-hand bookshops
of London and the Houses of Parliament (since an MP's new crime
novel Death at the Desk appears to have some bearing on the case),
Ferguson's series sleuth MacNab is at hand to assist Scotland Yard
in an atmospheric and ingenious fair-play bibliomystery.
First published in 1989, Among the Gods uses archaeological
evidence to explore ancient Greek religion. The book analyses
cult-statues and inscriptions to provide a detailed discussion of
gods and goddesses, the priesthood, and healing sanctuaries. In
doing so, it highlights the external, formal nature of religious
practice in ancient Greece, such as pilgrimages, offerings, and
hallowed sites. Archaeological records are used to examine both the
theory and practice of ancient Greek religion, and to provide
context to a variety of Greek myths and Greek literature. Among the
Gods will appeal to those with an interest in religious history,
archaeological history, and Classical history.
This book studies the pilgrimage of the Ancient World in its search
for moral truth. After a brief examination of the values which
dominated Homeric society and the subsequent aristocracies, the
central portion of the book is an account and analysis of the moral
ideas which illuminated the Greek, Roman and Hebrew worlds during
the classical period. The volume discusses the cardinal virtues,
the place of friendship, Plato's love, philanthropia and the moral
insights of the Jewish prophets and subsequently examines Christian
love.
First published in 1990, Jesus in the Tide of Time considers the
historical Jesus and studies the ways in which he has subsequently
been regarded by different people in different cultures. The book
examines the political, social, economic and religious background
to Jesus' life. It also looks at what is known about Jesus as a
historical personality, and considers the use of symbolic figures
by the early Christians to represent him. It highlights the
attitude towards the person of Jesus as an indicator of the culture
of the particular period and place throughout history, and
questions whether different cultures, periods and individuals
manufacture Jesus in their own image. Jesus in the Tide of Time
will appeal to those with an interest in the history of
Christianity, religious history, and social history.

Tracks & Signs of the Birds of Britain and Europe contains a
wealth of fascinating material for any field naturalist. This
unique guide enables the reader to find, interpret and understand
field marks left by a variety of birds throughout Britain and
Europe, and to use these to identify the species in question. It
covers subjects including tracks and trails, feeding and other
behavioural signs, nests, pellets, droppings, feathers and skulls,
habitat types and field analysis methods. All European bird
families are featured, with numerous individual species being
described in detail. Fully revised and updated, this third edition
contains a great deal of new material, including 19 new colour
plates and hundreds of new photographs, line drawings and diagrams.
Tracks & Signs of the Birds of Britain and Europe is an
indispensable addition to any feather-finder or track-watcher's
backpack - the ultimate resource for anyone wanting to identify a
bird species from the sometimes subtle clues they leave behind.
1. 1 Solution of geological problems-are mathematical methods
necessary? A question which is often asked is whether it is
necessary for geologists to know and to use mathematics in the
practise of their science. There is no simple answer to this
question, and it is true that many geologists have had successful
careers without ever needing to get involved in anything other than
simple mathematics, and all the indications are that this is likely
to continue into the future. However, in many branches of the
subject the trend has been towards using a numerical approach for
the solution of suitable problems. The extent to which this occurs
depends on the nature of the area being studied; thus, in
structural geology, which is con cerned in its simplest aspects
with the geometrical relationships between various features, there
are many problems which are easily solved. More recently the use of
analytical methods has allowed the solution of more-difficult
problems. In another area, geochemistry, two things have happened.
On the theoretical side there has been a greater integration with
physical chemistry, which itself is a highly mathematical subject;
and on the practical side there is the need to analyse and
interpret the vast quantities of data which modem instrumentation
produces. Within geology the application of numerical methods has
been given various names, so we have numerical geology, geo
mathematics, geostatistics and geosimulation."
All true craftsmen need the best tools to do their finest work, and
programmers are no different. Java Power Tools delivers 30 open
source tools designed to improve the development practices of Java
developers in any size team or organization. Each chapter includes
a series of short articles about one particular tool -- whether
it's for build systems, version control, or other aspects of the
development process -- giving you the equivalent of 30 short
reference books in one package. No matter which development method
your team chooses, whether it's Agile, RUP, XP, SCRUM, or one of
many others available, Java Power Tools provides practical
techniques and tools to help you optimize the process. The book
discusses key Java development problem areas and best practices,
and focuses on open source tools that can help increase
productivity in each area of the development cycle, including:
*Build tools including Ant and Maven 2 *Version control tools such
as CVS and Subversion, the two most prominent open source tools
*Quality metrics tools that measure different aspects of code
quality, including CheckStyle, PMD, FindBugs and Jupiter *Technical
documentation tools that can help you generate good technical
documentation without spending too much effort writing and
maintaining it *Unit Testing tools including JUnit 4, TestNG, and
the open source coverage tool Cobertura *Integration, Load and
Performance Testing to integrate performance tests into unit tests,
load-test your application, and automatically test web services,
Swing interfaces and web interfaces *Issue management tools
including Bugzilla and Trac *Continuous Integration tools such as
Continuum, Cruise Control, LuntBuild and Hudson If you are a Java
developer, these tools can help improve your development practices,
and make your life easier in the process. Lead developers, software
architects and people interested in the wider picture will be able
to gather from these pages some useful ideas about improving your
project infrastructure and best practices.
