The sense that freedom meant "license" infected the Corinthian
church in the first years of its existence. The gospel message of
freedom in Christ had been misunderstood by some in the Corinthian
setting, and the congregation soon fragmented over it. Paul, as
founding missionary and overseer of the young congregation, wrote
forthrightly in response to these internal struggles. Through these
letters, God through Paul transformed the trials of a struggling
congregation into enduring lessons on the basics of Christian
faith. 1 and 2 Corinthians: A Greek-English, Verse by Verse
Translation contains a Greek text based on Westcott and Hort's The
Text of the New Testament, from 1881. Each verse of the Greek
original is followed by its English translation. The book also
contains a brief introduction to the Apostle Paul and the
Corinthian setting.
In this masterful, Latin-English edition of scripture, the Gospel
of Luke and the biblical Book of Acts are combined in a single
volume, as when they were originally written. Each verse of the
Latin original is followed by its English translation. With the
Latin text drawn from the German Bible Society's 1994 version of
"Biblia Sacra Iuxta Vulgatam Versionem," "Luke-Acts: A
Latin-English, Verse-by-Verse Translation" is the latest edition in
Searchlight Press's Latin Testament Project.
This book presents the New Testament portion of Saint Jerome's
Vulgate Bible, as reconstructed by the German Bible Society. Each
verse of the Latin original is followed by its English translation.
In 587 BC, Jerusalem's Temple, God's dwelling place on earth, was
reduced to a smoldering ruin. Its faithful worshipers were in
exile, stripped of homes, possessions, and places of worship. Where
was God's promise amidst such destruction? From catastrophe,
something utterly new emerged. A physical Temple was replaced with
a portable one, in the form of the written Word. The books that
emerged from the Temple's destruction included Genesis, Exodus,
Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These works, rendered into
Latin in the late 4th Century of the Christian Era by Saint Jerome,
appear here in a Latin-English, verse-by-verse edition. Each verse
of the Latin text is followed by its English translation. The Latin
text of the Vulgate, used by permission from the German Bible
Society, is drawn from Roger Gryson's masterful 1994 Edition of
Biblia Sacra Iuxta Vulgatam Versionem. These works, translated
afresh by John Cunyus, are the latest in Searchlight Press's Latin
Old Testament Project.
Paul's Letter to the Romans is presented in a Latin-English,
Verse-by-Verse format, as the latest edition in Searchlight Press's
Latin Testament Project. Each verse of the Latin text is followed
by its English translation."I welcome the translation of the
Vulgate . . . The Latin language and particularly the Vulgate have
had an enormous impact on the Christian Church and our liturgical
and theological formation."Daniel Cardinal DiNardoArchbishop of
Galveston-Houston
This rough, unpolished story, first written down in the vulgar
Greek of ancient Rome's eastern traders and travelers, fixed for
all subsequent generations the outline of Jesus' life and ministry.
Through these words, the story of a Galilean Jew, crucified on a
Roman cross, became the story of the world's Redeemer, through whom
and by whom all other stories will be judged. Translated afresh by
John Cunyus, The Gospel According to Mark becomes the latest volume
in Searchlight Press's Latin Testament Project.
