Boreal Shield Watersheds: Lake Trout Ecosystems in a Changing
Environment brings together the work of a renowned international
group of scientists who specialize in aquatic science and
environmental management. They explore the functioning of Boreal
Shield ecosystems, focusing on the lake trout, the classic
coldwater species of northern glaciated lakes, using it as an
indicator of environmental change and as a model to measure the
effectiveness of management actions. This book demonstrates how
boreal waters have served as a crucible for decades of
environmental research into the impacts of nutrient additions,
trace contaminants, acid rain, climate change, sport fishing,
invasive species, and watershed disturbances. The text builds on
this substantial research legacy and explores our ability to manage
human interactions with ecosystems across the vast Boreal Shield
ecozone of North America, and with other important ecosystems
worldwide. It also provides models and new methods of assessing the
risk to and the durability of ecosystems in relation to local,
regional, and global human activities. Maps and descriptions of
several important long-term monitoring sites and an atlas
describing more than 3,000 lake trout lakes in the region are
special components of the book.

This encyclopaedia contains 350 entries arranged alphabetically.
The topics include biospeleology (by organism and by habitat); cave
and karst geoscience; cave archaeology and human use of caves; art
in caves; cave and karst history; hydrology and groundwater;
conservation and management; and exploration, equipment and rescue.
The largest number of entries are on cave and karst sites across
the world from individual caves such as Mammoth Cave (the world's
longest cave) and Krubera (the deepest in the world) through key
regions such as the Dinaric karst and the Gunung Mulu World
Heritage Site, to coverage of individual countries such as Iran and
New Zealand or larger areas (Asia, Central; Asia, South-east,
etc.). The essays in this volume, written by an international team
of specialists, progress from general concepts to deeper
understanding with jargon explained for the non-specialist. Each
essay is fully referenced, with suggestions for further reading and
cross-references to related encyclopaedia articles.

Tales from the Touchline: Football Memories from a Referee and Fan
is the story of a football fan and his experiences as a referee. A
fan of Dundee United for many years, John Gunn's playing career was
virtually non-existent, being limited to schoolboy level. He moved
home from Dundee to Elgin in 1979 and began his refereeing journey,
which took him from amateur levels to the Scottish Football
Association's Senior List. Ten seasons at the very top of Scottish
football saw John encounter the game's real characters, plenty of
daft decisions and a whole raft of humorous incidents. After
hanging up his whistle, John returned to the stands as a supporter
of Dundee United and his contacts within the game provided him with
even more stories to tell, many regarding his own team's fortunes -
including how Eddie Thompson took over from legendary ex-manager
Jim McLean. Tales from the Touchline has a mix of football's
politics, characters, blunders and a good dose of humour thrown in
for good measure.

Railways have played an immense part in the history of New South
Wales. The parallel lines extended as the population grew and
themselves made possible new settlement and new industries.
Railways crossed the mountain barriers that surround Sydney and
opened up both the vast hinterland and the northern and southern
coasts. Railways joined every part of New South Wales to Sydney in
a distinctive, centralized pattern. They also joined New South
Wales to the neighbouring colonies and states.
